Description: Traveled Lane Trailers, Inc.

This nice little Calico just came in. Actually, maybe we should call it the big little Calico. Whether it will be your only trailer or your local runabout because you don't feel like lugging the big trailer around every day, this no-nonsense Calico has a lot to offer.

Before we go any further, please note that this is a basic trailer, but it's not a stripped price leader that needs a load of expensive options to be useful. Read on and you'll see what we mean.

In this 12' body length, it's easy to handle, and at a touch over 2400 lbs. empty, you don't need a large vehicle to pull it. However, that same 12' body offers a warmblood-length stall and about 5' of head space forward of the chest bars. Since there's a good room forward, we specified a pair of optional Saddle Boss saddle racks (they're easily removable) and bridle hooks. This one is compact on the outside AND offers good interior space. (Even though the length is there for warmbloods, we ordered this one in 7' body height. We're not marketing this one as a warmblood model, but if you'd like this trailer in 7'6" height, Calico will build it.)

If you don't feel like lifting a ramp, this one's step-up. (But if you prefer a ramp, Calico will do it.) We specified a tieback on the rear gate (and one on the escape door as well). A tieback is a small detail, but we point it out to let you know that, while some dealers equip their Calicos for low price, we equip ours for safe and convenient use. (Frankly, we think it's more honest to quote a price for a ready-to-use trailer than to quote a low price and then run it up with a bunch of options that should have been on the trailer in the first place.) If a breeze comes up while you're loading, that tieback on the rear gate isn't such a small thing after all...

While we're on the subject of equipping a Calico to be ready-to-use, here are some other modest-cost options we typically order (that are on this trailer and included in the quoted price):

Brakes on both axles (brakes on one axle are standard)
Floor mats
Interior dome light
Spare tire
Greasable hinges (These install as an assembly; they have better alignment than the standard hinges and have grease fittings.)

The stall divider, post and head divider are removable. You can use this trailer as a 2H straight load as shown here, set it up as a box stall or remove the stall hardware totally and use it as a stock trailer. This one has a full-height escape door for easy access to the horses and with the 5' space forward, there's plenty of working space (and/or space to secure a tack trunk). And to reiterate, we specified a pair of optional Saddle Boss saddle racks and bridle hooks, so this is a usefully equipped trailer. Also, please note that this trailer has upgraded longitudinal tubes on the stall divider. They're wider than the standard tubes and can stand up to rougher use. It's one of those little details that make our Calicos just a bit nicer than many you'll see.

Smooth-riding torsion axles are standard, as are 16" Load Range E radial tires. You'll find that tire on 3 & 4 horse trailers from many manufacturers. Touches like these make a Calico an affordable trailer, not a "cheap" one. We also like Calico's rounded nose, which offers less drag than a flat front. (Looks better, too, in our opinion.)

The nice touches extend to the finish as well. Before painting, Calico cleans and primes the steel; sensible steps they've been doing for years. It's hard to get paint into crevices, so they caulk seams to reduce points at which rust can form. They've been doing this for years as well. What's new is their urethane paint. We found their acrylic enamel finish to hold up well, but in 2016, in the interest of product improvement, Calico went to a urethane paint with hardener. Their tests showed the urethane outperformed the acrylic in weathering and in abrasion and chipping tests.

We took on Calico trailers in 2008. We wanted to offer an affordable line of new trailers, but we also wanted to offer an alternative to used trailers. At the time (and still), we found that we were turning down a lot of used trailers because of poor condition. Several things drew us to Calico. They've been in business since 1983. They're an experienced and respected manufacturer, with a reputation for making honest, affordable trailers. They'll build straight loads and slant loads in a variety of lengths and body heights. (Need 7'6"? They'll do it.) They build bumper pulls and goosenecks, the latter with a variety of nose styles. With or without ramp. With or without windows. And much more. Calico is very accommodating and easy to work with. It's easy to do a custom trailer and unless that trailer is super deluxe, you'll likely be pleasantly surprised at the price. And on top of it all, it's a NEW trailer. The body is solid and looks nice. The floor is solid. The brakes and lights work. And it can have the room and features you expect in a modern trailer.

Whether you're looking for a new trailer or an affordable alternative to a used trailer, Calico's worth a look. We invite you to stop by and check out this one!

Prices include freight to our dealership, but exclude tax, tag and registration fees. (And we don't charge a dealer-prep fee!) Financing is available with approved credit.
