This 2000 Sundowner Sunlite 4H Slant with 12’ LQ just came in for us to show as a private sale. It’s roomy, well-equipped and well maintained. The owners recently purchased an even larger LQ, so it’s time for this one to go to a new home. It has an aluminum frame and aluminum skin and as we mentioned in the subject line, it has drop down windows on both sides. Drop the windows on both sides for better air flow than a livestock trailer. It has a great living space and we’d call the bath borderline huge. With the spacious LQ and great light & air flow in the horse area, this one offers comfort for horses and handlers alike.
If you want or need more space while participating in your horsey activities, this Sundowner could be the trailer for you. Body width is 8’ and height is 7’6”, allowing it to offer great room for the horses and their attendants. By our tape, the living quarters is 12’ on the short wall and 16.5’ on the long wall. In the horse area, stall offsets are 42” and the stall dividers are about 9’ long, so as slants go, this one has large stalls. The 7’6” height offers good headroom even for tall horses.
This Sundowner offers plenty of space, but a feature the owner was quick to point out is the drop down windows on the head wall and butt wall. The natural light and airiness afforded by drop downs on both sides makes the horse area very inviting and comfortable. On the head wall, you can lower the drop feeds and leave the window guards up (or put them down, but not while traveling!). There’s a 2-way vent over each stall, but the drop downs offer so much air flow that you may never need to open the vents. There’s a wide escape door with drop down on the front stall and there are mangers with under-manger storage at the other stalls. The stall dividers are padded and feature fast-action automotive style latches. There’s stud divider on the first stall and the rear divider telescopes.
On many trailers with mangers, the rear tack is fixed, but a feature we like about this one is the collapsible rear tack. Pull a ring to retract the top latch, pull a ring to retract the lower latch and it’s ready to fold out of the way. There’s no center post, so you can create a wide opening in about a minute. Quick & easy. The saddle racks swing out and offer height adjustments. In the rear tack, there are bridle hooks, a brush tray and a couple of blanket bars.
There’s a door allowing easy passage from horse area to LQ and vice versa. The escape door and stud divider on the front stall make that a good storage space or mud room.
If you enter the LQ from the rear, you’ll first pass though the very spacious bathroom. We don’t have a wide-angle lens, but we’ll describe the space and you can make a mental montage from our pictures. Going through the pass door, there’s the vanity and cabinets on your left and forward of that is the roomy shower with large frosted skylight. Back at the pass door, look to your right and the toilet’s in an alcove formed by a tall cabinet along the back wall and a shallow cabinet overhead. Forward of the toilet, there’s a hanging locker about twice as wide as we normally see, with more storage above and below. The owner reported that there had been a leak at the shower skylight over the winter. Since they detected the leak in one area, they had the entire roof sealed and the bath skylight replaced in Spring 2019. We had a torrential rain as this listing was being composed. We checked and felt no water infiltration, so it looks like it’s fixed.
The main living space is roomy and inviting, the feeling of space helped in no small measure by the abundance of windows and the light or blond wood cabinets. They’re lighter than the honey-colored cabinets we see in many LQs. Enter by the curb side door and across from you will be a large 2-compartment pantry faced in that light wood. Scanning that far wall, you’ll see the large refrigerator/freezer, cooktop, oven, microwave and sink, with cabinets distributed about. Forward of the kitchen space is the upper gooseneck sleeping area, with more cabinets, including storage around the side windows. It’s all attractive and functional. The owner reports that the combination fan & vent over the bed was replaced recently. Coming back down to the main level, along the curb side wall there’s a convertible sofa/sleeper with large window and storage above. There’s a simple sound system and hookup for television, but no television or mattress (giving you the opportunity to purchase the perfect mattress and the latest flat-screen TV!). The LQ conversion is a Southwest Series by Sierra.
A 16’ awning offers a good sized outdoor living space. The awning fabric and tube (mechanicals) were replaced in Fall of 2018.
The trailer rides on torsion axles and has 16” Load Range G tires with deep tread. The owner reports that tires were rotated periodically. The trailer was used in Spring 2019, so items such as air conditioner, furnace, water heater and microwave have been used recently. The owners mentioned several items that had been replaced or serviced, indicating an attentiveness to maintenance and repairs. In addition to the items already cited, new holding tanks were installed in 2017. The trailer has powered leveling jacks, but the main landing gear is a 2-speed manual.
