The Solo model name is a pretty good tipoff that this is a one-horse trailer. And unlike one-horse trailers of ancient times, Brenderup’s one-horse models are wide. The body width is 51” and all but about an inch of that is usable stall width. It’s almost like giving your horse a small box stall in which to travel. And if you’re a fan of Brenderups, you know that you don’t need a truck to tow them safely. This Solo has an empty weight of approximately 1300 lbs. and the loaded tongue weight is approximately 100 lbs. The body length is about 10 feet and the interior height is about 7’4”, so it’s a roomy trailer. Brenderups have been in production since the early 1950s, so their designs are well proven. The subject trailer is a private sale trailer that we’re showing at our dealership. The horse was sold, so it’s time for the trailer to go to someone who needs it.
The interior is a bright & inviting white. There’s a small fixed front window and a 5-way opening window on each side for light & ventilation. Above the ramp is a storm panel. The trailer can be run with the storm panel up or down and with the storm panel open, there’s even more light & ventilation.
Continuing with features at the rear of the trailer, please note that Brenderup’s standard ramp height is 5 feet. That’s a foot taller than many (most?) ramps. The 5’ ramp produces a comfortable incline and the ramp mat has convenient toeholds for good traction during loading and unloading. (Please note that Brenderups normally come with two assist rams for the ramp. This trailer has a simple modification wherein one ram was removed and an assist winch was installed.)
This Solo features Brenderup’s standard adjustable height chest and butt bars. Each adjusts to 3 heights and when you lower the butt bar, the wall mount is angled so that it also reduces the stall length. The butt bars have quick-action latches and even though they’re quick in operation, they also fit snugly so they’re quiet during travel. Other useful features are standard galvanized kick panels on the walls and a large groom door on the left side.
As with other Brenderups, the Solo has simple, effective Inertia mechanical brakes. With Inertia brakes, you don’t need a brake controller in the vehicle. When you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle, the Inertia brakes apply braking force automatically in proportion to the load in the trailer.
But wait, there’s more… There’s a durable galvanized steel chassis, low-maintenance Solid Phenolic Core (SPC) walls and a cool white fiberglass roof. The thick walls (about ½” thick) contribute to the quietness and good thermal properties of a Brenderup. As with other Brenderup models, the Solo has smooth-riding torsion axles (with shock absorbers) and radial tires, including a spare tire.
The trailer is offered with the following owner-supplied accessories: Trailer tie, bungee cords & Trailer-Aid (for use in changing tires)
