This very nice one-owner 1998 Jamco Competitor II 4H head-to-head came in recently for us to show as a private sale. A large trailer is no longer needed, so it’s time for a new owner to enjoy this versatile trailer.
We’ll talk about features in a moment, but first a few words about Jamco’s top-notch construction. Where most aluminum trailers have a skeleton of small tubes covered by a thin aluminum skin, Jamco trailers have walls of interlocking aluminum tubes. In this one, they’re stacked like the logs in a log house. The tubes by their nature make it a double-wall design. These elements combine to make for a very strong, quiet and comfortable trailer.
Another cut-above Jamco feature is their floor. Many trailer floors have cross-members every 6 inches and that’s good. Jamco’s floor has integrated cross-members every 4.5 inches and that’s even better. Up top, there’s a one-piece aluminum roof that’s lined & insulated on this one. We ran into a Jamco owner recently who hauls commercially. He estimated he has about a million miles on his Jamco. They’re built to last!
Floor length on this one is 28 feet - 24’ in the horse area plus a 4’ dressing room. Body height is a big-horse-friendly 7’6” and body width is a generous 7 feet.
The horse area features easily removable straight stall hardware as well as two box stall dividers so it may be set up as three 8’ box stalls. There are thick floor mats, the walls are rubber lined and the stall dividers and butt & chest straps are padded.
Further to the comfort of your horses, there’s plenty of natural light and ventilation. There are 4 large windows at the stalls plus 5 additional windows in the curtain doors and escape door. There are four 2-way roof vents over the stalls and as mentioned earlier, the ceiling is lined & insulated. It’s a nice place for your horses.
Side and rear ramps are spring-assisted and the side ramp is a generous 5 feet wide.
The 4’ dressing room has 4 adjustable-height saddle racks, there’s a row of 10 tack hooks along the back wall and a good-sized clothing rod in the upper gooseneck. The back wall, bulkhead and upper gooseneck are carpeted and the floor is matted, thoughtful standard features to keep things quiet. As in the horse area, the DR ceiling is lined & insulated and there are windows in the door and up in the gooseneck.
Hopefully you can see from the pictures that this Jamco is in nice condition, but there’s more. In our listings, we like to include some information on a trailer’s usage and maintenance. Since this is a one-owner trailer, the owner was able to give us the history from new.
In its first 5 years on the road, it did a loop between Maryland, Florida and Colorado 3 times a year. In the 2005 to 2015 timeframe, it went to about 10 shows a year within 100 miles of the farm. In recent years, it went to 4-6 shows a year within 30 miles of the farm. It’s been used, but it’s not a high mileage trailer.
As for maintenance, it received yearly service in those long-trip years and received maintenance every 2-3 years in its lower-use years. Running lights were upgraded to LEDs. It was detailed periodically and waxed every couple of years. It was detailed just before it came to the dealership and 4 new radial tires were mounted.
We don’t usually include this much information on a trailer’s history, but this one has received so much more attention than usual that we thought it was worth a bit more space in the writeup.
