This is advance notice of a Böckmann Portax L SR we have on order. The significance of the PLSR is that it has a very well-equipped walk-in tack room in a trailer that can be pulled safely by smaller than typical vehicles. We're expecting this one to arrive in May, but it's such a desirable model that we wanted to put the word out early so a lucky
trailer shopper won't have to wait a full special-order interval.
The "Portax L" part of the name indicates that this is a model in the Portax L series, which means it has an extra 25" of length compared to the already-roomy regular Portax models. The Portax L series has approximately 7' of space forward of the chest bars. Portax L models that don't have a dividing wall are sized for horses to 18 hands. The PLSR has the same overall length, width and height, but due to the placement of the tack wall where the nose taper starts, the PLSR is recommended for horses to 16 hands. Still, that means a lot of horses will fit comfortably in the Portax L SR.
The PLSR comes standard with 2 long sliding windows on each side. Also standard is a roof vent/skylight and at the very front, there's a fixed tinted window. The subject trailer was ordered with a sliding window in each groom door plus a sliding window in the tack room. Fortunately, a customer ordered a PLSR with that very window arrangement, which is why we have pictures in advance of the subject trailer arriving. We do want to point out that the picture trailer was built before the 2023 update to the Portax L series,and has the old-style front window. The subject trailer will have the smoother nose and wider window that came with the 2023 update of Portax and Portax L models. (Rather than take up too much space here, we've included a few extra comments about the pictures at the end of this listing.)
As mentioned above, body width, height and length are the same as on the other Portax L models. The center-post stall divider (with panels that may be swung out of the way) is the same as well, meaning the stall length is the same as in other Portax L models. Also the same is Böckmann's Multi Safe System stall bars with emergency release. If a horse gets caught under or over a bar, use the handle of the lug wrench to unscrew the exterior tie ring. This lets the appropriate chest or butt bar wall mount to come down, freeing the horse without someone having to get into the trailer. And in normal operation, the bars are easy to use and fit snugly so they're quiet. Böckmann trailers are loaded with thoughtful touches. It's no wonder they're Europe's premier brand. In fact, they're sold in over 30 countries. We wonder how many brands are sold in even half that many places!
As with the other Böckmann models, the PLSR has safe, reliable mechanically-actuated brakes (you don't need a brake controller in the tow vehicle). They apply braking force automatically in proportion to the load in the trailer. The operation is based on the centuries-old principles of physics. No electronics to fail, no brake fluid to change and no brake lines to rust out. And while we're in "no" mode, the PLSR's sealed wheel bearings mean no need to clean and pack wheel bearings.
The PLSR features Böckmann's WCFPlus coil spring suspension (with shock absorbers), just as on quality automobiles, it has walls of stacked anodized aluminum panels (as in the walls of a log house) and at the rear, Böckmann's 2-mode ramp/door is standard. Lower it as a ramp or swing it aside for step-up loading or loading of round bales or pallets or other cargos. The mat is glued to the aluminum-plank floor and the mat edges are sealed. Post-trip clean-up is a snap. No need to lift a mat. Just sweep or hose it out!
The well-equipped tack room includes a couple of wide, swing-out saddle racks in the nose, plus bridle hooks, shelves and storage nets. There are low profile mounts on the groom doors for the flat-backed feeder buckets and there's another pair of mounts high up on the tack's back wall for storing those feeders out of the way. There's also a fold-down stool and a fold-down boot jack in the tack room and more. Check out the pictures and see for yourself! (Please note that the PLSR in the pictures has an optional window in the tack back wall that we skipped, but the subject trailer does have the optional window in the tack door as shown.
As with the other Böckmann models, the PLSR carries just 3.75% of its load on the hitch. Even loaded to the max, the tongue weight is only about 223 lbs. For comparison, domestically-produced horse trailers typically carry 10-15% of their load on the hitch, for loaded tongue weights in the 600-800 lb. range. Light tongue weight and aerodynamic shape are two reasons why you can safely pull the PLSR with smaller SUVs and trucks, etc.

(A few comments about the pictures: As mentioned earlier, most of the photos are of a pre-2023 Portax LSR with the optional windows in the groom doors and in the tack room door. The subject trailer will have those optional windows. The trailer in the pictures also has an optional window in the back wall of the tack room (we skipped this interior window.) The subject trailer will have the silver-gray anodized aluminum walls and Black Metallic roof & bow [nose] as on the PLSR in the pictures. Except for the nose design and optional window in the back wall of the tack, the trailer in the pictures accurately shows the features that will be on the subject trailer. As mentioned earlier, the subject trailer will have the new style nose introduced in the 2023 Portax and Portax L update. The nose is more smoothly contoured and has a wider window. Near the end of the pictures,, we're showing the nose of a new-style silver Portax K [the window is more easily seen against the light color]. The picture after that is a Portax L K with the new-style nose in a dark color. In those last few pictures, we're showing the 2-mode ramp/door on a Portax L K because we forgot to take those views of a PLSR. And finally, we're showing the center-post divider in a Portax L K because we also didn't take that detail shot in a PLSR! The PLSR's divider is exactly the same and the front and rear panels of the divider may be swung left or right. OK, maybe that was more than a few comments about the pictures...)
