Jamco returns to Traveled Lane Trailers!

Here's a Jamco Premier Series Competitor I 2+1 that arrived recently. Many of you are likely familiar with the 2+1 floor plan, but if not, this one has a large box stall forward of 2 warmblood-sized straight stalls. It has generously-sized rear and side ramps and a dressing room with pass door between horse area and dressing room.

The beauty of a true 2+1 is the ease of loading via the side ramp, particularly if you do a lot of single-handed hauling without an assistant. Walk a horse in through the side ramp, back him into his stall and close the box stall door. Repeat for the second horse and then walk the third horse right into the box stall. When unloading, if you don't want to unload the front horse, you can unload the straight stall steeds via the rear ramp. Prefer shipping in box stalls? Remove the stall divider and you have two box stalls, each with its own ramp. The Jamco Competitor I 2+1 is a very versatile trailer and this one has some appealing extras. (By the way, we used the term "true 2+1" because some manufacturers will put a side ramp on a trailer and call it a 2+1, even if it's too short to allow convenient loading via the side ramp.)

We'll say more about the Competitor I 2+1 shortly, but first we'll talk a bit about the Jamco brand.

We first started selling Jamco trailers in 1998. When the economy crashed, buying patterns shifted, we took on some mid-priced products and drifted away from Jamco for a while. Over time, we noticed that customers were asking for Jamco by name or inquiring about custom features Jamco had done for us. We recently decided it was time to call Jamco and get their trailers back in the Traveled Lane lineup..

A signature feature of Jamco trailers is their walls of interlocking aluminum tubes. Most trailers feature skin-over-frame construction, where a thin skin of aluminum or steel is attached to a skeleton of small tubes. In a Jamco, 6" tall tubes were stacked, similar to how they build the walls of a log house. As with stacked-log walls, the horizontal tubes looked fine, so Jamco left them exposed..

You may have noticed that we said the tubes WERE stacked. It made for a very strong and quiet trailer. (Visit our website if you want to read about how well a Jamco survived being hit by a train.) Back in 2014, Jamco gave the tubes a 90 degree turn. The tubes are still interlocking, but they're now vertical rather than horizontal. Jamco's old design was massively strong, but Jamco reports that the new wall design is even stronger.

As mentioned above, in the stacked-tube design, the tubes, available only in white or natural aluminum, were left exposed. It was a nice form-follows-function look. Today's vertical tubes could look somewhat like a picket fence if left exposed, so the interior and exterior are covered in smooth sheet aluminum with a baked-on finish. But the strength still comes from the tubes. White interior and exterior are standard, but several optional colors are offered. A polished aluminum option is offered as well. The cosmetic skins are bonded to the wall tubes by an aircraft-grade adhesive. Most of the pictures here are of the subject trailer, but at the end, we've included a picture of a 2+1 that shows the optional black exterior. That trailer could have been specified with all-black exterior, but the optional polished aluminum was specified for the lower areas.

In case it's still not clear how Jamco construction differs from the more common skin-over-frame construction, please note that if you left the cosmetic skin off a Jamco, the trailer would still be fully enclosed and fully functional and have the strength of the wall tubes. If you left the skin off a conventional trailer, it would look like your horses are going down the road in a cage with widely-spaced bars.

Near the end of the pictures, we've included a picture of an 8-horse slant under construction. The cosmetic skin hasn't been applied and the vertical tubes are exposed. On that trailer under construction, you can also see the neat rows of robot-applied welds. So that you may get a closer look at the wall construction, including the welds, we've included an interior view of one of Jamco's enclosed car trailers. (In case you missed it, the interior and exterior walls of the horse trailers receive a cosmetic covering of aluminum sheet with baked-on finish. The walls are smooth and the tubes and welds are hidden. On their enclosed car trailers, they leave the tubes exposed on the interior for a nice industrial look.)

Chassis and floor are aluminum and built to Jamco's rigorous standards. The floor is of extruded aluminum planks with integrated I-Beam cross-members every 4.5". That's at least two supports per hoof span. We've included pictures of the underside of the subject trailer so you can see the robust floor planks and frame rails. In a picture or two, you can also see the lower ends of wall tubes where they attach to the chassis.

Enough talk of Jamco construction details. Let's talk about convenience and safety features you'll find on the Competitor I Premier 2+1 with Dressing Room...

As mentioned in the intro, this trailer has a pair of warmblood-sized straight stalls. Body height is 7'6" and body width is 7 feet, with a horse area of 19 feet. We specified 10.5' for the straight stalls, giving a roomy box stall of approximately 8.5 feet (versus a box of 7 to 8 feet on many 2+1s). Figuring in the 4' dressing room, floor length on this one is 23'.

For the comfort of the horses, there are are plenty of windows (with substantial window guards), roof vents over the stalls, padded stall divider, padded butt & chest straps, matted floor and matted walls. There's a single-piece aluminum roof above a lined ceiling of interlocking planks, all standard. The lined ceiling and white double walls contribute to a bright, inviting and quiet interior. This one's equipped with a bar-type head divider and the box stall doors have bar-type uppers. We specified a drop-down feed window at each horse's head, an extra window in the box stall and two roof vents over the box stall. Air flow and natural light in this trailer are excellent.

For the convenience of horse handlers, there's an escape door with running board on the road side and the door has two latches. The standard latch is a "butterfly" or compression latch. That one's animal-proof and can be released only from outside. We also specified a camper latch, easily released from inside or outside. There's a pass door for easy movement between horse area and dressing room.

A lot of ramps are 4' tall, but each ramp on this Jamco is 4.5' tall. The side ramp is 5' wide, offering a more inviting entry than a 4' or 4.5' opening. Above each ramp is a pair of curtain doors, each with window and guard. A Jamco ramp is as tough as the walls and has an effective spring assist. No description of a Jamco ramp would be complete without mention of another signature feature, the ramp hinge cover, for a smooth transition from floor to ramp as your horses load or unload. There's a loading light above the side ramp and a pair of loading lights integrated into the header over the rear ramp.

In In the 4' dressing room you'll find a saddle rack track with 3 adjustable-height saddle seats and numerous bridle hooks. The wall is carpeted to keep your bridles from clanking during travel. The gooseneck bulkhead and upper area are matted to keep sound down and reduce the chance of items sliding. The lockable door has a window and there's a window on each side of the gooseneck as well. As mentioned earlier, there's a lockable door connecting the DR to the horse area.

Dexter EZ-Flex axles are standard, as are radial tires, mounted on aluminum wheels on gooseneck models. (The spare is mounted on a galvanized steel wheel and is carried on the bulkhead under the gooseneck.) There are heavy-duty Aluminum Tread Plate fenders, LED running exterior lights and much more.

One Jamco cut-above touch that's hidden from view is their electrical wiring. On many trailers, wiring connections seem an afterthought. Connectors are often cheap, quick to install and prone to corrosion. Jamco's wiring connections are soldered and covered in heat-shrink tubing for moisture protection. This takes longer, but if you've ever had an electrical issue just before leaving the show grounds or trails at dusk, you'll appreciate Jamco's attention to detail. Peace of mind is one of the things you should expect in a true premium product.

The subject trailer has white exterior with black and charcoal stripes. As mentioned earlier, several color options are offered.
