I'm sure you're all aware of the hearings in Washington about the horse racing industry. It seems that since 2003, over 5000 (five thousand) horses have died due to racing activities. On a daily basis, an average of three die.

As related by several trainers, young horses are routinely given mega doses of steroids for growth and strength improvements. PETA just announced that they are recommending, that horses should not be started in racing until they are three years old.

Thought this might be of interest.

They have been screaming about drugs for years.  It seems the vets that are on the race track are as much to blame.  So is PETA going after the vets too?  So PETA is really thinking that racers are just going to give drugs to horses at three and prevent injuries?  PETA needs to get people who know horses and their development - mares, stallions and geldings.  Just my opinion and thanks for the information.  Where can I read more about this?

I think waiting until 3 yo would be a good idea for the racing industry, but who will actually do it.  However, I've become highly suspicious when I find myself in agreement with PETA.  I always know there's going to be a hard left turn in there somewhere.

I heard about it on the CNN morning news on TV yesterday. I'm sure if you googled the heading, various resources would be available. Please reread what I said about PETA. None of the references you stated were mentioned. Their concerns were the age of the horses when first raced.

I would like to see ethical treatment of animals ( and People, for that matter), but I wish PETA would mind their own damn business and get lives of their own. I do think some reform is due in the racing industry, but years ago it was really horendous... These days, its all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$! everything is. doens't PETA stand for "people eating tasty animals"?

I agree with the sentiment that PETA should mind its own business....maybe the PETA should read Paul's 4th of July post.

Garb, Sorry about my first message about the drugs.  I have tried to find more information about PETA and the government not racing horses until they are at least 3.  All I could find was just a few lines at best.  I agree with PETA at this time.

It seems you have to start with yourself and ask:  What is the trainer doing?  Is it the best for my horse?  What is the final cost - do I always think about the animal first?  I have have read the articles about the drugging but how you can denia medical treatment if your horse needs it?  I hope racing will have a come about for the good of the horse and owner.

I don't care for pigeons myself but hire more hawks.  I love to see them fly and PETA needs to find a better cause to fight.
