Just completed my first civil war reenactment this weekend as part of a company of mounted cavalry. I have the utmost respect for the horses and riders. I have rode over some rough country in Wyoming and Canadian Rockies, as well as played club polo. None of this holds a candle to firing and reloading a carbine and revolver while mounted and moving, and doing a sabre charge at a gallop. Our horses stood fine just 50 feet from cannon firing. We galloped in front of the crowd with loud speakers blaring, infantry on the move, and the confederates on our tails. It was incredible. I was glad I have been a rider for 50+ years :). Most of the credit, however, goes to the horses!
