My Wife and I currantly have a 30ft motorhome and a featherlite goosneck trailer for the horses and stock. She usually drives a minivan around during the week. We have been discussing trading in her van, the motorhome and the trailer for a bigger truck and a horse trailer with LQ. The Questions that I have. She has less than 20k on her van and she has had it for 3 years so she doesn't use it much. With our wonderful gas/diesel prices which would you buy, Gas/Diesel???

I know it deppends on how much you will be pulling. We will only be pulling the trailer twice a month and mainly only about 100-200 miles each trip. Right now our motorhome gets 8 mpg. It is a Gas motor. We are looking at 1 ton trucks right now. No dullies at the moment but if found one for the right $$ it would work. We plan on keeping the truck for many years mainly because we will only put about 10-13 thousand miles a year on the truck. So the ??? is GAS or Diesel??

8mpg gas
16mpg+ diesel

Diesel does not cost twice as much as gas.  Go diesel.

When you compare the cost of the diesel option over the gas motor, it would be unrealistic to assume that you would eventually get your money back in fuel savings. If you were a high mileage trucker, it would be a different matter.

Having said that, I own a diesel that is only used for hauling and work; it is not a daily driver. I enjoy the power and ease at which it will pull my trailers down the road. I do get better mileage than with a gas motor, but this option costs many thousands of dollars, and I have no expectations of recovering that expenditure. We bought it for the power, pure and simple.

A pick up with the largest gas option would be a better daily driver, less expensive to purchase, and would be a competent towing vehicle. On the open road, diesel fuel is not difficult to find. However, in some of the smaller towns we frequent, it is not always available.

I would keep your minivan, you've already paid off the largest part of its depreciation, and buy a gas powered truck. Around here, many one ton trucks are sitting on the dealers' lots, month after month. The dealers are paying monthly premiums for them and would love to move them out; any potential purchaser should be treated like gold. It is definitely a buyer's market, and shouldn't be difficult to purchase an in stock truck at a dealer's invoice or lower.

I did as Gard succinctly said... I bought the largest gas engine available.  It's a great tow vehicle.  One has to drive it differently than a diesel tow vehicle though.  A gas engine develops its torque with RPM.  Letting it rev and the transmission shift gets the trailer up the mountain roads.

The only issue is GM's decision to not offer the 8.1 lit with the Allison Transmission anymore.

Talked to a RV dealer at a race last weekend that said he was only getting 4mph with the new Dodge V10. And, that wasn't even with a big trailer! He was just pulling a 5th wheel camper that was only about 20 feet long. It made me feel good about my F450 getting 10mpg pulling 16K # of LQ trailer.

I had the same issue with mine.  It used a Qt of oil every 500 miles.  But it got better with mileage.  At 30,000 miles, not a qt between oil changes  (about 5000 miles)

I have an 8100 Chevy that only uses a half quart of oil between changes, a one-ton dually. I previously had a 7.3 diesel Ford that I had to carry an extra gallon of oil in just for the engine leaks. Y'all can have your diesels, I love my 8.1 Chevy.

Hosspuller,I think I remember that we talked about that before.Ours never DID get any better. It was at the rate of about 1 1/2 qt.per 3K miles, too close for comfort for us.We traded it.

I got tired of rolling around in puddles of diesel in my wheelchair then having to put the wheelchair behind my seat with the fuel coated tires. You know how folks will run their tanks over at the pumps then it spreads all over the area. Everywhere I would go, doctor's office, bank, post office, grocery store, etc., folk would comment about smelling fuel oil....It would be my wheelchair tires....And my hands!! So in 2001 when GM came out with the 496/Allison combo in a 3500 truck, I went and test drove one and bought it. Yea mine uses about a quart of oil between changes, but the every "Big Block" Chevy I've ever owned did the same. No, it's a pig when it comes to mileage, 12.0 empty and 8.0 with a GCVW of 23,000#. That sounds a little better than our friends F450 diesel on another post. I still have one diesel truck, a 1988 F250 with the IDI 7.3........It gets about 10 mpg.......When it's running. I hate that GM quit using the 8.1 in the 2500 and 3500 trucks. That 300+ horsepower 6.0 GM gas engine ain't got the %^*%$#$%^ that the 8.1 has!!

I love my diesel.  We started pulling trailers with a chevy 3500 with a 454.  While the motor was wonderful, we got a hopeful 8mpg going downhill with the wind. That was with a small trailer & truck camper.   My diesel (chevy 6.6L) does much better on gas mileage, where as with the 454 we couldn't pass a gas station without filling. I have a very large heavy steel LQ trailer, and I couldn't imagine pulling with anything less than my current truck.  I just like diesel better despite the current prices....I actually think it smells kinda good.  Better than gas anyway.

B & CR- I'm basically in the same position as you. F350 V10 for pulling the horse trailer and for general family use. 2001 bought new now has 69,000 miles. When I bought it everybody was telling me to buy a diesel. I asked if they were going to pay the interest on the $7,000 extra it would cost. Nobody stepped up. I average around 15 mpg empty. Just spent the last two weekends moving kids home from college, about 1200 miles and averaged 15.2. Loaded with my 4H with a 6' short wall weekender an two 1100 lbs horses I will get 10-11 mpg depending how I drive. Have a co-worker who bought a 2007 F250 diesel and he just told me the best he's ever done is 18 mpg EMPTY on a 1000 mile round trip. The V10 has all the power you'll need. Do the math and get a gasser.

I picked up a deal on a used Chevy Duramax with a manual transmission. A friend of a friend, the young man had just gotten married and had a company truck to use. It's a joy to pull with and gets so much better fuel economy than the gas truck it replaced!

I would just shop hard for what you want.
