Apparently, while on the x-country course, his horse somersaulted over with him.  There appear to be no spinal injuries ( they tested for them using some new techniques developed by the Christopher Reeve foundation, I'm told) but the biggest thing they are concerned about it brain injury.  He was showing at the preliminary level on a very sound, safe horse, but just like we've talked about before on this board, anything can happen.

March 18, 2008 Statements from the Chiacchia Family

After breathing independently for a few hours, Darren had a temporary set back. He developed a fever and pneumonia causing him to be re-intubated and is now breathing with a ventilator. He continues to receive superior medical care and remains in critical but stable condition. The Chiacchia family wishes to extend their appreciation for all the concern and support.

He can use all the good thoughts he can get. For daily updates you can go here. I'd say they are guardedly optimistic right now.
