we're looking at trading our 03 ford, dually, diesel.  mark is looking at the gmc (1 ton, dually, diesel) due to the 100,000 mile warranty front to back.  i've never had anything in my life but a ford and am a bit nervous about changing to something different.  we have a biggggg trailer to pull but dont want to go bigger than the 1 ton due to cdl requirements.

anyone know anything about the new gmcs?

I have test driven them and am really considering purchasing one in the next few months. We have a 2002 GMC 4x4 crewcab dually with the Duramx/Allison. We have been VERY pleased with it's performance and low maintence cost. It has 105K miles on it and still on the original brakes! Since about 70K of those miles were pulling a 3H LQ with a mid tack' I attribute the tranny performance to the long lasting original brakes. Overall, it has been the best dually I have owned since 1972! This truck has performed so well that I really hate parting with it. But, hubby wants to retire in a few years and wants to have all the toys purchased while he is still working. I have also test driven the Fords but keep going back to how great this Duramax/Allison combo has performed for us. The Onstar has been a real life saver. But, I do love that King Ranch interior that Ford offers. I sure wish I could get it in a GM truck!
I think the new GM trucks are quieter, have more power but don't get as many mph as my 2002 GMC does.

I think you could buy any one of the big three today and have a good truck.

For me it's who offers the best deal and has the options I want at the time I'm ready to buy.

Try reading Mr. Truck's HD shootout...the Chevy 3500 was there choice. BUT, I was wondering...what is the difference between Chevy and GMC? I hate the new Chevy front end, but the GMC looks great. Anybody have any GMC/Chevy opinions? Thanks

If you could find a 2007 without the new emission controls...you will be very happy...My wife's GMC 3500 C&C has experienced none of the shortening of mpg that I have heard from most diesel owners with the latest emission controls...

Hi ntcowgirl.....well I have a 2005 Chevy diesel/dually 3500 and I have a 45Ft. LQ trailer...in my opinion...I am seriously under-trucked! Of course, it will pull it...but I had to install air bags...because the frame is really not the right one to pull these heavy trailers...also the wheels, tires and brakes are lacking, too...of course many folks will say...bah, humbug...it is sufficient...but my tongue weight is 7,000 lbs...after all it is a ONE TON truck...also there is stopping ability...and again all these "good ole boys" will say forget her you can pull easily with this truck...but it is a safety issue...I am looking at used Medium duty trucks like Freightliner, International or at least the 6500 or 7500 Chev. GMC trucks...I don't think a CDL is required yet for RV drivers....I also added the Edge chip and monitor and have the Prodigy brake controller but I don't really feel safe when I hook up and go!

So what is the actual weight of your trailer?

And what is the GVWR and GCWR of your Truck?

Here is a calculator that you can use...

Judy K........I sure hope you have a good lawyer on a retainer, you keep pulling a 45' trailer with a 7000* tongue weight behind a 3500 1 ton pickup and you'll eventually need his or her services.

Damn. According to that site my 05 Dmax can only pull 9600#......no wonder everyone thinks you need a 3/4 ton to pull a 2h BP. Sure glad I didnt go for a 3H, then I would really be pushing the limits. Give me a break.

I just recently bought a 2008 chevy dually with the duramax. I had a 2004 3/4 ton chevy with a duramax My new truck has alot more get up go than the older truck but the mpg is about 13 city and 15 hwy 10 pulling and i only have a 4h stock trailer. I have not pulled our fifth wheel travel trailer with it yet and the truck has only 4100 miles on it so its not even broke in yet. I have heared that ford trucks are getting even worse mpg. The new Dodge not doing very well either.

Nothing.

Theyre the same truck.

It was easier to spel GMC since Chevrolet was so long. They had a few spelled Chevroley, Shevreley, and decided GMC would work better for the long word challenged people.

That's funny Slick!

We are driving an '07 GMC 3500 crew cab dually Duramax with Allison transmission and we pull a 39-ft, all aluminum 3H with 12-ft LQ. It's our fourth GMC in 22 years. We've loved every one. Not a lick of problems with any of them. Only difference we've ever known between GMC and Chevy seems to be hood, grille and sometimes the interior. They advertise GMC as commercial grade, but I can't believe they are that different. I don't understand why GM doesn't go to one truck either but we prefer the GMC's looks.

I appreciate everyones input. We got the GMC, 1 ton, diesel, dually, 4x4, all that stuff and so far we like it..havent pulled the big trailer with it yet and that will tell the tale. I've never in my life had a truck that wasn't a Ford so I admit, I am nervous about switching. The things I like so far as a lady...much easier to get in and out of! Omgosh, the ride is smooth, like a car! When we picked it up I told my hubby...they gave you the wrong truck...they gave you a gas one! He assured me it was a diesel but for the life of me I could not hear it!  I think I still hear ok??

Good for you, ntcowgirl....I do love my Chevy diesel/dually 4x4 - exceptional handling, ride and all...but with a 45ft. 3 horse slant....it does not handle my heavy load...you may have to add air bags to the rear suspension...I did...let us know after you hook and pull any distance....my truck will pull the trailer..barely...anyone looking for a nice truck - 36,000 miles?
