I took in a 10 year old TWH mare that was a rescue. She was at least 200lbs under weight when she arrived. One front foot has a pretty good case of sheared heel, and the other front foot, has an under run heal. She does not appear lame at all, and moves nicely in the pasture. Her feet were real long, the shoer trimmed off 1.5 to 2 inches, still leaving her a little long, so as not to make her sore, which worked.  I've read up on the sheared heels, and it seems to be 50-50 between leaving barefoot, which I did, and putting shoes on. I was wondering what folks may have done with their horse to correct sheared heels? I've not had her x-rayed yet. I was thinking of waiting till we get the length and angles correct to do that. Since she is not lame, I figured there was no rush on the x-rays.

It will be 6 to 8 weeks before she puts on enough weight and builds enough muscle tone before I saddle her. She's a really pretty thing, a little shy right now, but coming along nicely.

I would take this to http://www.horseshoes.com/ ,plenty of professional top quality shoers there and some no nonsense "barefoot" providers. Richard

If you had her X-ray'd now you know what angles to have her trimmed toward...instead of doing it the opposite way and hoping you get them right, then shooting films.  Just my thoughts.

I had shoer/cowboy do a horse I had and, he suggested and used a fullbar shoe. His logic: it increased the area of the foot and provided more support.

I thought about that also, but the x-ray's will tell us more after one more trim. I didn't think it would be a good idea to take it all off at once, even with the x-rays. If she had been lame, I would have started with the x-ray. After the x-rays, I'll talk to the vet/shoer about shoes.-Betty
