In an earlier post, Spooler said that he fed his horses flax seed. I believe that he said he could get a 50lb bag for @ $36.00. Was wondering where you get it that inexpensive. Have been getting mine from Omega Fields and am very pleased with the product ,however it is much more expensive than that.

It is ground flax seed. I get it from my local feed store who get's it from her supplier. I don't buy it by the bag anymore. I hate adding suppliments (time consuming). I switched to a feed that has ground flax seed in it. Seminole Perfect 10..... Still can get the ground flax though.

Spooler - have you ever had a problem with the ground flax going rancid? Does your feed supplier add anything to suppress spoilage? I've considered going with flax over the boss, but boss is much easier to work with.

I never had a problem with it going rancid (new that it could) but my feed store is great in that department. They order feed every week (tractor trailer load) and they sell it all in a week. Never seen anything like it. They call on Wednesday with order and feed is made on Thursday, delivered on Friday. Process starts again every Wednesday. It's crazy. She would only order my Ground Flax when I asked her to because I was getting low.
I was feeding 5 horses 1/4 cup 2 times a day and it would last 2-3 months.

the best way to feed flax seed is freshing ground. as it loses it's potency quickly! and it also spoils quickly. so buying huge amounts may not be a good idea. you may want to think about feeding BOSS. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds. Cheap and easy to feed and horses love it! Or Cocosoya oil, this is what I feed.

Yeah, we feed gro-n-win by Buckeye and love it. Their supplements (like ultimate finish) are gawd-awfull expensive. Flax is fed for the omega-3 oils and the finish it gives the coat and hooves.

My guys get close to a cup/day of whole flax seeds. Flax does loose it's potency quickly after grinding, so I only feed whole. Did some research on the whole - since I'd had some say the shell was too hard for a horse to chew & found out that there is so much liquid in the gut that it breaks the seed down quickly, thus the horse (or human) is getting the full benefit. If you don't believe it, put alittle water on some - they will turn to mush quickly. Also, I was getting it for about $15/50# up here...then it went up to $18, then $23...not sure what it is now. A wonderful friend in MI got me some - $12.50 for 50#!!! - & my folks brought 400# out for us when they recently visited. We'll keep it cool & bagged & since it's whole, it won't loose it's good properties.
