While on the way home today from the shoot in La Jara Colorado, a New Mexico Livestock Inspector stopped me on the way home, I had just got off I-10 at 404 to Chaparral when I saw the red lights in my mirror. I stopped and the officer inspected my certificate of health, my coggins and looked at my horses. Luckily I travel with all required papers when traveling anywhere with my horses. The officer was very polite and somewhat surprised that I had all my horses' papers in a 3 ring binder to include copies of their registrations. I completely support their effort and hope to see them out there more and more. Just a reminder, carry the proper papers to travel with horses no matter where you go. The citations are not traffic tickets, they are criminal citations which start as misdemeanors and can be enhanced to felonies if you break enough laws

Thanks for the reminder. Is that only if you are traveling out of your own state? Or do you take the papers every time you trailer?

Thanks. To be perfectly honest, it never occurred to me to bring papers along on little trips. Now I guess I'll have to dig up my horse's papers and vet certificates. That's what I love about horses...You never stop learning.

I just keep my papers in a folder in the truck at all times, that way I know I won't forget them and will have them on the short trips too, just in case. Never been stopped to see them, but want to be prepared.

I keep a brand inspection, Coggins and the last health certificates in an evenlope in the glove box.

The Brand Inspection and Coggins are current. The health Cert is only need if I cross state lines, so it sometimes will be a month or two outdated.

I've been asked to produce the papers at stateline truck stops, Once when stopped by a County Sheriff in Wyoming, and when ever I enter a National Park like Bryce Canyon or Yellowstone. I just keep them and a copy of the horse registrations in the truck.

We also keep a 3 ring binder for our horses. Everything we do on the horses, etc. vet visits, places and dates we visit, and a picture with there registration papers. Sort of like keeping a diary! When we lived in Kansas, the horses were microchipped. Notebook is always kept in the truck.

Yellowstone?  The lady I talked to told me outside horses wern't allowed in.  Of course she may have just been full of it because her exact response was, "private horses aren't allowed in because you would have to have all kinds of shots, and papers and certificates.".  Like we don't have to have all that already?

I asked her because I saw several "non yellowstone/outfitter" trailers driving around.

We have gotten our horses in the park in the past. You do need all your papers and you have to have a CLEAN trailer. Nothing on the floor.

They open up your trailer doors and make sure you have swept it out and there is no manure, saw dust, etc on the floor.

My husband piped up and said that the lady said something about some "bug" that horses have that they don't want in the park so I think she was just blowing smoke.  Especially since the buffalo go where ever they please and come into contact with horses off the park grounds.

Either way I guess it doesn't really matter since I will NEVER again drive on those roads.  They scared the crap out of me!!
