Me and my fiancé are looking at a 3h slant BP to be pulled my her 05 F150 (9500lbs towing), hence it should be fairly light and somewhat affordable $10k-$13K.

We have 3 horses: a 11yrs old 16.2h/1100lbs Sadlebreed/Arabian(hers) and 4yrs Percheron 16.2h/1300lbs (put will probably top out at 17h/1500 or so) another PMU rescue that will probably top out at 16h/1100lbs. Usually we would take only two horses (but we would like to be able to bring all 3): the perch and another one.

At first we were looking at warmbloods 2h straights, but lately decided to go with a 3slant bp and in particular a circle j mirage (should be 7’ wide and 7’3” or 7’6” tall):

Will it be wide enough for the two bigger horses(we might remove a divider and make it a big 2h slant when only taking two horse)?7’3 or 7’6”? (the perch has a short neck)

We are located in Santa Clara, CA (near SF and not exactly horse country) and might make a purchase at the upcoming horse expo in Sacramento? Any suggestions?

If Merhow is there, take a good look at them.  I just bought a two horse.  It comes standard 7'6" tall, the stalls are good sized and mine weighs in at 2,850.  I am incredibly pleased with it.  Oh, and it tows like a dream.  Of course, everyone has an opinion and there are a whole lot of good trailers out there.

I'm jealous!  I miss the Expo in Sac, used to go every year before I moved to Texas.  Have fun!

Hi and welcome to the forum. We have a 04 Bison Alumasport 3h slant, front dress/rear tack that is suppose to weigh 4,450lbs empty. Have hauled with older 3/4ton burbie with rebuilt/upgraded engine(more hp/torque than stock) and tried and true turbo 400 tranny. Now pull with 01 GMC 2500HD(8.1/allison combo). First off, when pulling with burbie, it would pull 2 horses fine, add that 3rd horse and tack and you were working that truck on any hills. With 2500HD--no problems. I feel you will be taxing your truck loaded with three horses and tack. I'm not bashing 1/2 tons for pulling, but those are big boys your talking about hauling. Second, the biggest horse we haul is a 'built' 15.2h app(looks quarter) that is probably 1200lbs+ that just starts getting his butt on the rear wall. I wouldn't feel comfortable hauling larger(longer) horses regularly in current trailer. I think a stock trailer with 2 box stalls might work better for you(possibly going gooseneck) or  a 2 horse straight load built for the bigger warmbloods. Good luck in your trailer search.

You will be okay to pull the horses in a 3 horse bumper pull, but you won't get them stopped. We went through rotors and brakes every 5000 miles on our 05 f 150. After a planned long haul with our 3 horse, I immediately came home and traded for a diesel. The power, control, braking, and drive time are un beatable..............Stopping for gas every 2 hours is crazy on a long haul in the gas engine!!!! The diesel engine is the only way to go. We have an all aluminum ELITE stock trailer......We are very pleased with it. Best of Luck!!!

you need to get your trailer brakes checked out, there is no reason to go through pads and rotors just becaue youre towing.

I second the Merhow and add Logan which may be more avail. in your area.

The main adv. with Logan is the stall size in their 7'3" wide trailers for the slant.  I think they have several models in your price range. My draft cross fits with room to spare (16.2 with good length neck).  I have the 7 foot tall and he is fine as is my very long necked s-bred but if anything over 7 foot is an option and in your price range I'd prefer that just for my personal preference. Mine are very good loaders/haulers so more head room wouldn't make a difference to them.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the info.

As far as going GN we can't since we have a camper shell to brings our dogs around....and for long trips(maybe tahoe or yosemite) we would use my futurtre father in law f250 diesel. We would only use the f150 for short trips(1-2 hrs) each way

thanks again

Ended up getting a Circle J lightning deluxe 4H slant (a carryover 06 model): trailer is pretty big( but all Al, so it's only 3700lbs). We are taking the first divider out and making it a really big 2h or a 3h on occassion. We did have my percheron in it and she takes up a lot of space, but she really gets in and out well(making entire trailer shake)

The last divider(close to the gate) can be locked in on the left side of the trailer, however there is a sign that says "do not travel with divider in open position": does that mean we should take it out? (not bad considering it's about 60lbs of deadweight)

I 'll try to post pictures later on

I think that might mean that the partition needs to be supported by being secured when traveling.  I believe it would be alright to travel with it being taken out of the trailer altogether.  I will second the notion that 3 of those size horses in a bumper pull could cause some issues in being able to control the rig in an emergency behind a half ton.  A good brake controller, receiver hitch with equalizer bars and sway control would be a must.  I would assume that the truck has the tow package?  That would be most significant on an auto tranny, not being a nitpicker here, just hoping to be of help...congrats on the new trailer!

Yes,

the truck as a tow pkg and just got an odissey brake controller: we tried installing a weight ditribuition hitch but hte technician said that that particualr model would in the long run damage teh frame of the trialer.
If anybody ran into a similar problem(and found a solution) please let me know?

thanks

Most of the time we will only go with two horses and the perch is very very calm(almost letargic)

check out TRAILS WEST!  And what ever you buy, make sure the trailer brakes work!  the F-150 will do the job, but when you replace the truck brakes get the best you can buy!  DO NOT BUY THEM FROM FORD!  Try and find raybestos brand.   The Trails West is really a great trailer and they are really affordable, a ton of trailer for the money.  MURDOCK TRAILER SALES in Loveland Co.  Talk to Doug and he will deliver!  They have a ad on this web site.....

97 FORD CREW CAB DUALLY, brand new TRAILS WEST 4horse 8x13 slide out and 5' mid tack!  LOVE IT!

It seems some folks don't allow for the fact that in California, he will be traveling in foothills, and mtns. That f150 is going to be really strained to the max to stop, and carry three big live loads. He also needs to consider using his father in laws f250 diesel to move those kids, and that what you go up...you must come down.  BRAKES!

Just my opinion, but you CAN'T have too much truck, ( or too much money for that matter!)
