I'm looking at buying an F-250 SD 8' bed truck to pull my 2 horse gn featherlite trailer with a weekend package. This truck will just be used to pull trailer and going to get feed and hay. I already have an every day vehicle. Don't want any bells and whistles or stuff on it that I don't need as I need to keep the price down.  Which engine should I get the V8 5.4 or the V10 6.8? Also besides the towing package what do I need? Is the 3.73 limited slip rear axle ratio good for what I'll be using the truck for?

Any and all recommendations needed and appreciated!!

Thanks

I have a '99 F-250SD, auto V-10 that I tow my 16' Titan steel GN with and it is sweet.  Plenty of power when you need it for merging into traffic or going up hills.  I don't have 4 wheel drive and I've made it through a hellish ice & snow covered winter in eastern Kansas with this truck.  I tried to get chains for it but the shop never came through for me.  Maybe next year.

Good luck w/ the truck shopping!

what kind of gas milage do you get with the V10? I'm hoping with a featherlite 2 horse I can get the v8 but was wondering if it had enough power. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get the V10..sigh

We've got a V-10 in one of our rigs, it's a '01 F-250, I can't recall its mpg ever bein' better than 14 bob-tail, and can get as bad as 10 with a wagon on the hook.  Power is pretty impressive, but what with only one fuel tank and that kind of mileage it makes it a pain for long trips, haveing to find places to get a good size rig in often, but we have a solution to that problem...we can always take the F-350 with dual factory tanks and a 105 gal. aux. tank in the bed, sure don't have to stop for fuel very often with that outfit!  Keep on truckin' (till ya have to pee, anyhow)  I'd sure think that you'd be O.K. with a V-8, have to admit I've not owned one that wasn't Diesel for alot of years, I don't know too much about the power of these newer ones, but I've heard that they are even better than the older ones, and even the older ones would have done fine with a two horse trailer like you're talkin' about, heck, if they can't handle that what ARE they good for, ya know what I mean, not like you should have to get a big V-8 to pull a 16' utility trailer around.  Just thinkin' out loud here.   Talk to y'all later...

The best highway milage not hauling is 16 mpg.  City runs 12 mpg and hauling a full load runs 10-11.  However, gas milage is not a factor for me when considering a tow vehicle.   Honestly, no trucks have "good gas milage".  The V-10 was only a mile per gallon less than the V-8 but the difference in power made it easy for me to take the V-10 over the V-8.

Ionapaint,

Just bought an 07 F250 extended cab, 8' bed. LOVE IT!!  It is the V8.  Don't have a problem pulling our CM GN 2 mule slant load trailer loaded down with water, food, feed, everything we need to go "camp" with the mules.  (I say "camp" because no longer have to sleep in a tent!!!!).  I don't remember which limited slip ratio we bought, sorry.  We owned a 94 F350 its entire life, not a power stroke, but was a diesel and it didn't have the power that the new gas F250 has...NO WHERE NEAR THE POWER.  The V8 has close to 300 horse power which is plenty for a 2 horse GN.  Since ours is still so new, milage may get better, but right now its about 14mpg, slips a little bit pulling the trailer.  I say go for it unless you plan on getting one of those "luxury" living quarter, 4 or 6 horse slant in the future.  Mary
