I'm wanting to add leather ties to my saddle at the cantle and pommel and haven't the first idea how to go about it. Anyone have any ideas? I wanted to just take it to the saddle shop but my hubbie says he can do it.

It depends on what type of saddle you're using, and if it already has or doesn't have dee rings at the pommel and cantel. If it doesn't, you need to have someone experienced with saddles to install them for you. If you do this yourself, and aren't careful, you could end up damaging your saddle and/or the leather. If it already has dee rings like most western and trail type saddles do, then go to a saddle shop and buy leather tie strings. They're pretty cheap. I've used long black shoelaces in a pinch, and they worked fine but looked tacky. I prefer the leather ties on a leather saddle.

I noticed this strap you could buy from Country Supply that added the strings to your saddle without having to do any changes to the saddle itself. This system used nylon straps though. It looked handy for trail riding. I am not sure how feasible it would be at tying on a rope to your saddle if you are using it to rope.

You should have conchos on front and back both sides. You can buy D-rings with a metal clip that the concho screw goes thru. About 50-80 cents each. Unscrew your concho and place the clip under the leather concho (or screw head if the concho is too big). Purchase 4 leather pieces (I bought 40" length for $1.95 ea.) and double and thread thru the the metal loop. I found with shorter lengths its harder to tie that coat on the back. If you can't find the metal loops you can get D-rings and take a piece of leather cut to fit thru the loop and about 3" long. Punch hole near the ends and attach under the concho like previous description. I have also seen the pieces already together for sale in discount saddle catalogs for $5.00 each but these were shorter strings than what I could use. I have also just attached the D-rings and used snaps with leather attached.

Most horse supply catalogs have the dee rings cheap. I use a leather shoe string from work boots for my saddle. They work well and aren't too bulky when tying gear up.

Ditto on adding D-rings as you can use a variety of things to tie with (bailing twine, shoe strings, etc.) I also use those carabiner clips as it makes it fast and easy to clip stuff on and off.
The problem with the leather ties is they can break.
