My husband and I were thinking about planning a long weekend trip sometime in April. We are fairly new to all of this and don't exactly have our trailer set up yet for camping more than a night. I am in south central Illinois and would be willing to make a 4-5 hour trip to a place that had lodging for us and the horses. I have been to Shawnee and rode High Knob, absolutely gorgeous, but a bit rustic accomodations for what we would like to do this time. Anyone have any suggestions.

Land Between the Lakes at Golden Pond, KY. There is a place to get a burger and camp supplies. They have five barns and four bath houses that are nice. They are open year round. Basic electric sites are $16 and stalls are $6.

Midwest Trail Ride in Norman IN. It has to be the best horse camp I have ever been to. I ride Quarter Horses so the riding was not the best but the facilities are first rate. Electric(30 amp) at every site. Water at every site. Covered Stalls with metal swing gates. Restaurant free firewood. Nice big wide trails and about a 2-3 mile ride to national forrest.

I also would like to know where Big Bear is. We are always looking for new places too. Land Between the Lakes was nice (have cabins). Very easy trails, nothing like Shawnee. Bear Branch has cabins. We want to go up to Siloam Springs SP up by Quincy. Heard good things about that place,but haven't been there. No cabins though. It's on my list to ride this year.

We camped at BearBranch in Shawnee an they have few cabins to rent out reasonable. I want try Brown County in Indiana also sometime.We loved Yellow River in Wisc, but we have Sundowner Liv,quarters to stay in.The park is so nice perfect trails.We have res at www.4-J.net in June I can hardly wait.Jubilee State Park,IL is 28 miles from us an like mini Shawanee(so we're real spoiled)in great riding.Try this site www.horseandmuletrails.com

Shari, there is a Bear Creek Campground near Onieda, Tn not far from the camp called Station Camp. It is in the Big South Fork Region. Great riding down there. We stayed at Honey Creek Campground. Great riding there too. It is in the southern part of Big South Fork. They have a web site, honeycreekcampground.com. From there I think there is a link to other places in the area. At Honey Creek you ride right out of camp. Nice campground too. Debbie

We camped at Bear Creek last year at Big South Fork. One trail in particular was a bit treacherous, my horse slipped and fell, thank goodness I had dismounted, but I do need a new stirrup now. I had a backup saddle, so I used those. Some area the trees had died due to pine beetles, so some areas were not too pretty, but then some were absolutely gorgeous.
The campground...ehhh, been to better, but it was shady, which I liked. No cabins, but all had electric and water. I didn't care for where you had to tie the horses, it was on concrete, each horse had a standing stall, literally, standing. Each horse had about the width of one side of a 2 horse trailer, and the sides looked like the partitions out of a horse trailer. I wish I would have gotten a good picture of this. A horse at the neighboring site kept trying to launch himself over the manger area of his "stall". Campers were not allowed to picket their horses, and really wasn't anywhere to picket.
Big South fork is a great place to ride, but I think I will chose a different campground next time.

Also, a few years ago, we camped at a place called Lago Linda. I had heard that she closed her campground. That was a very nice place to go, has anyone heard if she may re-open?
