I am thinking about putting down mats in my stalls.  The floors are dirt with a lime layer on top.  Anyone have any recommendations?  We are not fancy at our place, but we thought the mats would really help keep the stalls cleaner and easier to clean.

We have mats in our stalls, and it has really helped keep the floor level, and also assisted in keeping the stalls a good bit drier. In our 12*12 stalls, I have 4 mats in each - they seem to do the job pretty efficiently.

I put mats in my stalls last spring and really like them. I ordered the mats at the local Tractor Supply Co. Store. $299 for 12x12 inter-locking mat kit. I've had not any problems with shaving getting underneath the mats. Sure makes striping the stalls alot faster. I checked their web page and the inter-locking mats are not listed there. I have one more stall to do. Hope they still sell them.

Summit mats are by far the BEST you'll find.  They will ship them to your barn.  I've had mine for 18+ years and I've only replaced ONE, not one stall only one mat.  That was my fault because the floor wasn't level and that mare stomped a crack in it.  I cut the mat into bumper pads for my stocks.

Helpful hint:  if the mats are light you're wasting your money...if the mats are HEAVY you'll only deal with them once and they'll out live you!

I have the protector and you can get these in the interlock also.

We recently built a 10 stall barn and put matts into the stalls and would not consider any other way.  We put down a 4-6 inch limestone base.  Limestone was watered, leveled and packed numerous times. (this job is no fun and don't wear anything you don't mind throwing away).  The matts we used were 4x6 and about in inch thick (can't remember the company however if interested let me know I can get the Compnay name) we researched quite a few companies, thick matts reduce slipage.  Per stall cost was about $300.00.  Had to make a few cuts tried everything, an razor blade with a hook works the best, changed baldes every couple of matts.  We save shavings, easier on horses, and urine leaks are caught by the limetsone.

I have 3/4" 4' X 6' mats in my lean too.  Keeps it dryer out there.  They were only 40 bucks a peice and bought them at my local hardware/horse sales place.  Call around and find your price.  They are very nice to have inside or out.  And yes they help with the cleaning inside.
