I recently purchased a 2003 CM Dakota 2 horse slant trailer and was surprised that my Paint gelding does not fit in the front area of the trailer.  He is apparently too long and so the divider bar will not latch.  Has anyone had a similar problem, and if so, were you able to purchase an extention or find another way to move the divider?  For "Apache" to fit comfortably, the divider bar needs to attach 4 - 5 inches closer to the trailer door.  I realize that I can leave Apache loose in the entire trailer area, or haul him in the back part of the trailer, but I would like to find a way to haul him in the front area, with the divider bar secured.  I will greatly appreciate any help/sugestions!

Good luck with that.  I know my gelding doesn't fit in my front divider and it isn't just a few inches.  He barely fits in my back divider without getting the door slammed on him.

I am currently looking for new trailers and can't have the mangers because it is too small for him, he is a wide QH, with a long neck and long body!  He is size 86 blanket and super long neck... SO we have a hard time with trailers :(

Will be interested to see if anyone has any more ideas!

Bonniedoc,

Your CM is probably a 6' wide trailer as I had the same problem with a 6' wide trailer I used to own. The trailer I have now is 7' wide and my horse fits much better in it. Your horse would be more comfortable riding in the second stall.

86" size blanket? I would be looking for an 8' wide trailer w/o mangers for this big boy to fit comfortably. Another thing is to measure the length of the slant/stall and the width.

I have a similar problem with my QH gelding - bought him as a 2 yr old and he grew a bit bigger than I expected.  He just fits in the front stall of my 2H slant (7ft wide/7ft high), but I found putting him in the back gives him a little more room for his big butt.  I think he balances a little better.

My dad had an 8 foot wide trailer and he would give him a partion and a half.  The way the 8 foot wide stalls are were not as wide for him as you would think.  I honestly think that the rear stall is my best bet.

Something for those horse owners to think about.  Yesterday I went to look at some trailers with mangers and I was amazed, I am sure that most horses fit, but I know mine would have a hard time fitting expecially in the front stalls.

I happened to be looking at some new trailers yesterday as well.  There was an 8ft wide Integrity with mangers.  I have to say I did not like that idea either.  It shortens the actual standing length of the stall and I think I would be concerned that a horse could try to climb up in those mangers and get stuck.  I also did not like the outside door latches.

Whatever the trailer width, for LONG horses you just about NEED 11ft for a long horse or a long neck'd horse. Measure the divider on a slant load or the door/ramp to wall distance on a straight load.

BTW, you don't get most of the supposed advantage (horses per floor foot) of slant load trailers in the 2 horse size. 3 or more horses, yes you get to cram 'em in.

I have been looking at 2H slant trailers and noticed the CM Dakota did not have a large front area.  I ended up buying a Circle C 2H Wrangler which is 7' tall and 6'6'' wide and my 15.3H QH fits in the front partition comfortably.  The end stall is also roomy for the second horse.

I think that a lot of Qh people are now going back to the straight load trailers, because the "new" type of QH just doesn't fit in a slant load !I have a friend who hauls horses as a business. He has gone back to a straight load head to head 4 horse that is a full 7'6 high.At the Congress, I saw a lot of staight loads being used.....After all, you just won't fit a 17.2 hand HS horse into a slant...LOL....I have a slant..6'8" and my 15.3 horse fits fine..but he does have a short back.I think that people are discovering that the slants are not what they are cracked up to be...

Am curious? What exactly is a "new" type of QH? After much counseling I was just beginning to come to grips with the fact that I am undertrucked and have a BP w/o LQs. So are the '06 QH models bigger, taller, and have more "horse-power?" I suppose my therapist will be happy.

Well, geeze I thought I was the only one who had a problem with this, I never heard anyone else complain about it. When I considered trading in my 2H straightload with its 31" stall width, 9'5" stall length (6'5" chest-to-tail, 3' neck & head), I discovered that my ordinary horses would have a tight fit. My 16 h horse is 8 feet nose-tail in crossties, my 15 h horse is 7'6" nose-tail. The slants I looked at were from 22" to 30" stall width, and 7'3" to 8' stall length. When I say length, I do not mean the diagonal length indicated on manufacturers diagrams, I mean the "straight" length - the way a horse stands in the stall. Generally, if the diagonal measurement is 113" to 117" the horse has about 7'3" to 7'9" nose-to-tail. If the diagonal length is 125" to 130" the horse has 8' or so. This is "generally" depending on stall width. In many trailers the second compartment gave less length. In a large 6H alum slant I measured 34" width by 8'6" stall length. I also noticed that in the used trailers with the narrower stall widths, I saw more scrapes and dings on the solid wall of the front stall, the horse being unable to spread his legs on stops. I found that the size of the outer dimensions of the trailer were not always an accurate indicator of inside horse comfort. I went inside many trailers at local showgrounds and took measurements. Standing inside the closed stall compartment I found some to be very confining and claustrophobic. I would measure your horse width and length, then measure the stall compartment.
