I am in the process of adopting an appaloosa whose name is "Which Clu Am I". Does anyone know if the lineage of "CLU" appaloosas are positive for HYPP.

Thanks

I haven't a clue.....

Has this horse or its parents been HYPP tested? That is something to find out. Can you contact the sire or dam's owners for more info?

Good luck!

You never mentioned the mares pedigree?  Who is the Sire and Dam?  Kid Clue?  Let me know the lineage on your mare and I'm sure I can help you or send you to some one that can.  Don't panic just because you think she might be N/H.  I have 3 horses that a N/H.  No problems.  This N/H thing has people that don't know any thing about it talking and acting silly.E-mail me.

Call the Appalossa Association or check their website...I'd be scared about why he has such a nice name(sounds registered) and why is he up for adoption?

Hi Huntseat,

Yes, Clu is registered, and evidently there are some really nice horses in this lineage.  I agree with you, it is curious that he is up for adoption. Still haven't made a decision as to go ahead with the adoption, but I have to and soon.

Thanks for your reply.

Pre-purchase exam maybe?  If this adoption sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

An adoption is different from a purchase. The adoption barn retains ownership of the horse for the rest of his life. But, all the can do is say 'no' to a adoption trial period.  You can check out their rules at the following site. www(.)brightfuturesfarm(.)org .

You can see some pictures of Clu at the following site.  Would greatly appreciate every ones throughts.

Thanks

Ok, here's my take on this horse.  Remember I've never seen or handled this animal, I'm just going on gut from his description.

Something traumatic happened to him somewhere in his life.  It speaks of fear in his description.  It says he has been shown, have you called to check on his points?  I'm betting he was just an open show "show horse" and nothing more.  It also states he needs constant praise...was he beat?  Is he fearful of men/women/people with deep voices?  Is he head shy?  They speak about him being good, but it's what they leave out that most telling in these situations.

I'm not saying don't do it, I've rescued registered horses from starvation and they've been "tricky" but worth every moment.  But you have to know EXACTLY what you are getting into before you make the commitment.  Some rescues have really dumb rules about getting approval to transport the horse, etc.  The last thing you want is to take the horse to a friends barn for a week and then have it taken away fom you for violating the rules...blah, blah, blah.

Good luck!

FYI, I've never been a fan of "glass" eyes...I can't see any emmotion in them.  Also, my last appy had really bad skin cancers due to his pink skin around the eyes and his sheath.

His 'need' for praise and attention sounds exactly like my Brandy. I've been concerned about this too.

I have withdrawn my application for adoption as of today. Due to my mother's illness, I just don't have the time to devote to such a needy horse. My sister was supposed to be involved in settling Mom's affairs, and now that burden has fallen on me!!! I don't have a life, but I am looking forward to the future.

And, I am not throwing in the towel on Brandy. She deserves a chance and I know she has been abused, probably because she is so insecure. Any money that I might have for training will be for her.

I have a friend on another board who has researched Clu's lineage, and it does go back to Impressive.

THANKS EVERYONE

Going back to Impressive doesn't really mean he is an Impressive offspring...and I have seen real genetically tested offspring of Impressive that were fine.

Why do you think they genetic test now?  Hint, hint.

I was told that he did not go back to Impressive and there was no need to test him.

I decided to decline the adoption for several reasons.  I bought my beloved Hank when our riding school in Maryland closed. I beat the others in line for Hank by 45 minutes. He had been abandoned by his owner. Brandy has been passed around also. I love Arabians. I did not want to just 'settle' for Clu. I decided that I wanted to start clean with a horse who had not been passed around & around.  When my nightmare life changes, I will seek the horse of my dreams, a healthy, sane horse, that can handle these mtn trails and that spells Arabian.

Thanks again for all your feed back.
