We have 2 mini horses and a llama that we need to drive around occasionally. We would like to get a small trailer for them because the larger trailers we have now eat up the gas. Are there any trailers that are especially designed for mini's? We have full sized horses also, but just wanted something smaller for the little guys. Thanks so much for helping!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I saw a 6 horse head to head mini trailer for sale in the local "Want Adveriser" a couple of weeks ago. It was described as being converible to a 2 horse trailer by the removal of partitions/dividers - for horse up to 51.2 as I remember it. Not sure of the manufacturer, I'll check the ad.
It is in New England and too far for you, maybe the mfgr's name would help your search.
Other possibilites might be sheep trailers ?
I've been to shows where a lot of folk just seem to use mini-vans, probably not practical for more than 1 or 2 though..

Several Mfgr's built sheep or hog trailers that were five feet inside height and five foot wide and from 10' to 16' in length. These trailers could be converted to the mini horses. Sooner trailer was probably the largest Mfgr in this type of trailer. If you went to a hog show you would see what I mean. You might check with Trailer Mart in Bakerfield, Ca. and have one built to your spec's. They are a dealer and deal with trailers.

Here is a statement I found on Hart. "Hart offers custom built trailers as well as a full line of models including a trailer for Miniature horses. The floor on these trailers are interlocking aluminum tongue and groove, with I-beam cross members on 6 inch centers. Try to find that on any other trailer! "

Hart and Stidham make beautiful mini trailers.
One thing to consider:
When you go to clean it out or mess around inside the trailer, you can't stand all the way up! If one of your guys has an accident and you stand up real quick you might knock your top off! If your hubby is big he may smack his head and hate making every payment from then on.

I didn't think so, though I understand Gore to be mid/high on the price and quality scale. I havn't seen it, just quoting from the ad to give the O/P a data point.

I have now had miniature horses for 21 years, and I 'still' have a 'big' horse, too. I have a CM steel 5' X 14' stock combo, and it fills my needs VERY well-I can still haul one/two "bigs", or a BUNCH of minis, or, either of my mini-sized 4 wheeled driving vehicles-a back-to-back trap and a buckboard-AND the pair who them!
That said--are you hauling the llama and the minis all at the same time? If so,I'd suggest a basic, no-frills two horse trailer-perhaps an older one. If you only haul either one or both minis, OR the llama, you could even use a basic one-horse. Even if you are willing/able to spend a good deal of money, I wouldn't suggest the 5' tall trailers(and I have seen some that appeared even shorter..UGH!)--visualize trying to clean the trailer out, while stooped over-not to mention the clonked head mentioned by another poster! No WAY would I have one of those things,regardless of cost...I know several people who have the Harts-they are nice, but I don't think would offer you much if any savings in the cost of the fuel to pull them.

We occasionally, 4-5 times per month, pull the llama and the mini. We have 2 stock trailers right now and my mom wants to get a smaller trailer for when we only need to pull either the mini or the llama. I wasn't able to find any of the short (5' tall) trailers for sale near us. The new trailer is mainly going to be used to pull one of the little guys at a time, but if both could fit together that would be great.

A friend of mine had a custom "mini" trailer made for her. It is all aluminum,2 mini straight load with drop down windows and all! She paid $3500The neat thing about it is that it fits in the bed of the truck! She then can also haul her full size trailer behind the truck. I could take pics if you wanted? This thing has a contraption for loading and un-loading into the bed of the truck. a rmp for loading the minis slides underneath the mini trailer and between the bed of the truck for storage.

The maker of the truck bed mini trailer is Bob Kane. He is the president of AMHA, and/or AMHA magazine. She said the ad is in that magazine. She doesn't have the phone number off hand right now but could get it. I can take pics this weekend. I sometimes think about bulding a fold flat rack of some sort.
Pipes, hinges, etc. Maybe buy pipe gates and cut them up.
Saw, drill, weld...
Maybe some snap together fittings ?
Minis are pretty much the same proportions as full size horses, it would be simple enough to just scale down the divider, chest, butt bar dimensions and spacing.
I think minis are NEAT, but couldn't keep enough of them to fill up a trailer (-:
