I went to a horse auction last night, and was very surprised to see horse going so cheap (blame on Osama).   They ran a strong looking 9yo,not spooked, fully broke ranch appy/paint cross through with one eye.   He starting bid was $125..ending bid for $125..no one wanted him.   I started to buy him, but I declined so.  Did I make a stupid mistake by not getting him??  Is a one eye horse worthless??

Thanks

They learn to compensate quite well.  We had a horse at our barn that was blind in one eye and no one knew unless we told him.  You just tried to walk up to him on his good side, etc.

We now have an old App mare at the barn that has basically gone blind in both eyes.  She gets around quite well, can be turned out, walks around carefully and we talk to her alot when leading her places, but she's not handicapped.  She can be ridden as well.

I've had two friends with one eyed horses.  Neither had a problem.  Both had the eye sewed up.

John Lyons horse, Bright Zip, was completely blind for several of his last years and traveled all over the country doing exhibitions with John. Horses do compensate very well and can be very very functional with only 1 eye.

My wife had a great barrel horse that was blind in one eye. Had to check on the first barrel but other than that the ran some great times.

I have known a couple 1 eyed horses. They were mostly used on trails and cows. You would have never known they were by their performance. Like every one has said. They compensate for it real well.

I just came back from a horse show where 2 one eyed horses were barrel racing and pole bending... both (one an open horse and one a large pony ridden by a junior) were at the top of the placings and putting in awesome times. I think one is heading to congress... Horses truely are amazing in how they can cope.
