This is an emotion ladden subject. The anti slaughter side's only argument against it is based on someone's feelings.
The anti slaughter crowd known hence as AS, is very willing to expend other people's money and property. AS could easily eliminate slaughter if they would buy every unwanted or unuseable horse in the country with their own money. But they don't want to do that. As a result dangerous horses will be passed off as kid-safe to get rid of them. Better to get $50 than spend several hundred bucks to "euthanize" it. Some horses are best slaughtered instead of them killing a person.
The cited article is full of horse hockey.
I didn't send my old first horse to slaughter when his time came, but I'm not against slaughter. There is a place and need for it.

I may be in the minority here, but I agree with hosspuller, there is a need for it. I wouldn't send my horse and beloved pet to slaughter either, but I wouldn't begrudge you for doing it. In some countries horse meat is a part of life and very normal to eat. We eat cow without a thought, and other countries may frown on that too. I would only hope that slaughter houses are as humane as possible. If you ban all horse slaughter in the US, it will lead to alternative methods that may not be as desirable as you would want. When my good ol horse died (last month), I was lucky enough to be able to be with him, and have him buried in my pasture. Some people arent able to do that.

Living within 40 miles of one of the largest horse slaughter plants, I can tell you from experience that the biggest problem is with horse rustlers stealing your horse and taking to Bel-Tex for a quick buck. I've known some people who found their horse there after being stolen. And don't think that if a good looking horse comes in with a brand that they always demand proof of ownership. I'm not against slaughter but think better means of protecting our buddies should be enforced.
