Hi all
I have a question. I got my truck today and I measured from the hitch to the ground. I measured 20 1/8". My friends trailer, she said is 18" from the coupler to the ground (but it was also sitting in a hole). Does 18" sound right for a trailer? I thought it was 17". I'm trying to find out so I can buy a ball mount and a ball. So is it 17 or 18"? Or can it be both?

So what's the average trailer coupler height?
Thanks all for the help. I appreciate it!

Hi,
Recent trucks seem to be higher, more fashion than function.
Be sure to get the truck on flat level ground when you measure, no wheel in a pot hole. Same with the trailer, level it with the tongue jack and measure to the top of the ball coupler.
I thought we just did a thread on this, please search for similar topics.

Eh.. its sorta the same I guess. But not really.
I'm going to the fairgrounds tomorrow and they have 2 nice horse trailers on display. I'm going to use that for my measurements to see what their height is. They are parked on pavement.
My truck is 20". I already know that. I measured it from a flat surface. And, my truck is older. Its an '91 GMC Sierra 2500.
ETA: What if the trailers ARE 17"? Its difficult to find a 3" drop thats weighted for more than 9000lbs. Most are 6K and under.

may i suggest actually hooking the trailer to your truck with any ballmount? then if youre using say a 4"drop and the trailer is down in the nose youll know that you need less drop.
doing the math will only get you close, there are too many variables involved to do a calculation and walk away. tongue weight, as well as spring rate of the truck will make a big difference.

Lisa .. I find myself agreeing with Chadsalt .. You're best served actually hooking up your truck. The weight of the trailer WILL reduce its height. You also have to remember the trailer will be unloaded too. Depending on your trucks springs, the drop could be almost the 3 inches you're looking for when fully loaded..

I would hook up the trailer, load it and then look at the trailer. If it sets level, or almost level then you don't need a drop. You have to have a ball either way so just put it on the truck first and try the trailer on it to see if you need a drop. No sense buying something you may not need. A lot of the later model trucks sit high until you put weight on/in them.

Thanks..
I don't have a hook up. The only thing I have, is the square receiver. Thats why I was curious if I'd need a drop just for an inch. With the trailer weight, I'm sure it would drop that inch, maybe more.
There's a trailer place here that sells trailers.. I'm going to ask them tomorrow when I call and see what they recommend.
