I just got info on a 14ft BP 2h. slant that would come with an extra 12 in. added on to the tongue.  Stating that it would distribute wt better and turn better.  The standard length on this brand is 30 in. according to mfg specs.  I would like some info on whether the extra length should be ordered and which length is best for safety and handling on this particuliar trailer.  Thanks

I have no data what-so-ever to back up my thoughts. I have always pulled a BP and now have a CM 3 horse slant. It has a 30" tongue. I have never had a problem with a properly balanced trailer needing a weight distrubution hitch or extra tongue lenth. With only two horses, which should ride properly over the axles unless the trailer has been modified, you should not have to make after-market modifications to drive under normal conditions. Just my opinion.

"better" ?
Compared to what ?
As a sweeping generalization a longer tongue will make a trailer easier to control when backing, will lighten the tongue load and allow more space for the installation of WDH hardware. I'm trying to think of a downside...
assuming it is adequately stiff, not just an extra bit of square steel tube stuck out there, I'm not seeng any cons.

Sounds reasonable to me. Thanks for your opinion.

Good information about advantages of longer tongue.  Being a first time buyer, I want to cover all the bases and have no surprises afterward.

I like the extra length, if you also ask to have the jack set back so you can drop the truck tailgate without hiting the jack or so you don't have to lower the jack to drop the tailgate. My thought.

the tongue on my trailer is 40", had to buy one that long to use my WDH.  i cant see where it makes a difference one way or another. does make the trailer 10" longer though.

the tailgate comment above might be a consideraton. i have a liftgate, and the jack is not set back, no problems. that would depend on the truck, i guess.
