We have a 2002 dually diesel. We pull a Sundowner 8010 LQ. It's large and heavy but according to Ford it's rated to pull this weight. Got on the interstate on the way to camping trip, overdrive was off. A noise that my hubby describes as a roaring up & down, then the check engine light came on. Made a u-turn at the next exit because the idea of being stuck on the highway with our horses is totally unappealing. We put the overdrive on and no noise and check engine light went out.Any ideas?

We experienced this with our 2002. Our service advisor at the dealership stated that the engines have a built in cooler that kicks in occasionally. We now have two 03 model Fords with the 6.0 and they will moan occasionally when pulling. I recently hauled a trailer 1000 miles with an 05 F-350 and noticed the same moaning sound occasionally. However, I never had the check engine light to come on. I would take it to the dealer to make sure a sensor is not going out.

Im not sure what may have caused the check engine light, but is it possible the noise you are hearing is the engine cooling fan? My 1999 f350 and most heavy trucks have a liquid fan coupling that engages the fan when the air coming out of the radiator reaches a certain temperature. Under normal operating conditions, I never hear my fan. But when pulling the trailer heavily loaded on a long slow climb, the fan coupling will engage and you can really hear the fan...after running for a few minutes or after the load or pull is decreased, the coupling disengages and the fan noise quits...its all based on the engine cooling temp.

Initially I thought engine fan clutch, but a) the O/P said it was at highway speed and b) the check engine light came on, so I have doubts.
Chev/GM don't light the check engine light for this, though that is not a good enough reason for Ford not to.
It is certainly possible, if for example the accelleration to cruising speed was prolonged and up a grade. I would expect it to cut out again in a normal slowing down/stop for an interstate off-ramp.

Thanks so much for the input. We'll be taking it to the dealer to check on that engine light. Hopefully it's just a sensor going out and nothing huge. Wish us luck!
