Just days away from ordering a new custom GN trailer. Although I don't need a 3h, am wondering what resells better, a 2h or 3h trailer? Has no LQ, 4' short wall, slant load, stock/combo. Thanks!

Debbie

Usually a 3H has better resale, however there may be someone who is looking for a 2H and can never find one.

Hi MIfarmbabe, thanks for your reply. Guess the important word there is "may", as in someone may be looking for a 2h. I'm assuming there will be more 3h buyers than 2h, so I'll no doubt be ordering a 3h.

Anyone else have an opinion? Er, wrong choice of words: everyone here has an opinion! lol. Anyone else want to address this before I plunk down the big $$$ in a few days?!

When we were looking for a trailer: our list of have to haves.. (we have two horses)

3 horse slant

Aluminum skin at least.

4 foot shortwall

pass through to horse area from DR

escape door at third stall

rear tack compartment

big window in the long wall

After living with what we got for two years...

butt side drop downs for venting.  with 6 drop downs, it's like a run-in shed when all the drops are down.

insulated roof - include horse area

Vent framed and supported for a/c

neck-over high enough for the new truck (I blocked my trailer for the required lift)  Consider extra tall to get the head space back over the GN.

My guess is a 3H would have better resale than a 2H.

Thanks, all, for your replies. Hosspuller, got it covered on several items you suggested. Looks like a 3h will be my choice. 'Sides it's better to have too much stock space than not enough, eh?!  Was just trying to save a few thou on the major "sticker shock" by buying a 2h!

Even though I haul one horse 90% of the time, I'm still happy we bought a 3 horse slant.  The first stall is my feed room, mud room (with door to LQ) storage room for step ladder, chairs, all that stuff that has to go, too.  Out of 7 weekends this season, two have had me putting my horse in the trailer due to severe thunderstorms during the night.  All the above stuff was in the first stall, and my mare had plenty of room for her feed and water in the two stall space. We put rings and snaps on the dividers so we can secure them open over to the side.

We are dealers.  The demand for three horse goosenecks is more than 10 times the demand for two horse goosenecks.  However, if you are looking for a two horse slant, it will be hard to find.   I think you will be happier with the three horse.

As far as resale, it's hard to tell. Every market is different and although the demand for 3H trailers is greater, so is the number of them for sale. I can tell you that I couldn't find a 2H gooseneck in this area that I liked so I ended up ordering one. I had several dealers tell me that I would have a very hard time selling my old 2H straight load, no DR, under manger tack trailer and I sold it in less than 24 hours. The buyers had been looking for one for several months and couldn't find one in decent shape so they were glad to get mine. There is less demand for a 2H but there are also fewer for sale which keeps the resale value up.

If you are even considering a 3H, you would be much better off getting one now rather than wishing you would have down the road.

It's ordered! Decided on a 3h because I really did want that, and didn't want to regret my decision later (thanks Champhorse for the insight).  Now, last decision: yes or no on the pass through door from tack room to stalls. There are nearly as many decisions in custom ordering a trailer as there are custom building a house!

In our experiance.  When we get to the campsite, all the stuff that traveled on the floor of the LQ gets transfered to the horse area.  The pass through becomes like a giant closet at camp.  If it's raining, or you're in your pajamas, it's the same as an attached garage.  No need to flash the neighbors or get wet.

Unequivocal ..."YES" to the pass through

The walk-through door is an essential to me for all the above mentioned reasons, especially since my camper door and escape door are on opposit sides. The walk-through and escape door in the first stall makes the whole unit function well for me. Examples, driving during a recent downpour I parked to wait out the deluge. Dashed into the LQ and was able to check on and reassure the horses, make a sandwich and wait. Can get everything ready for bed and reach out the back door (escape door) and turn off the generator in my jammies! The walk through would earn its keep just for the mud room function. Yes, an essential to me.

Excellent reasons for a pass through door.  'Course that means also getting a stud divider for the first stall, eh? Those "necessary" options just keep adding up. KA CHING!   My husband thanks you for your advice---he's the one writing the check, lol.

Not necessarily.. We wanted a stud divider originally, but the trailer that we got didn't have it.  I haven't missed it.  We only put hay into the third stall.  We secure the hay bales with a couple of long bungie cords.  If the hay got into the horse's area, I'd imagine the horse wouldn't panic as much as Uhmm food! how can I can some...

So the extra stuff travels in plastic totes on the DR floor.  Safe and secured from getting in with the horses.  Only after the horses are unloaded and the stall's shavings swept to the side do we move the totes to the back.

Debbie, I went from trailering a 3 horse Gooseneck 5ft shrt. wall to a 2 horse slant load gooseneck 15 ft. short wall. I do not miss the extra compartment. The question you should ask is how often would you haul in the third space. If you only ever bring two horses, then a 2 horse with a with larger living area or a small half-midtack might be an option I would look into. As for the stall divider I would definately invest the money since You do not want anything to come loose and slide under your horses feet in the event you need to stop fast or if the horse became untied and tried to put its neck under the divider to get at the hay (speaking from experience here ) . Plus you can keep all of your stuff you bring permanatly in the first compartment. Depending on the brand of trailer you are looking at, there are stall dividers that have hanging rubber to the floor. This option may save you some money. And you might also want to look at putting a cowboy shower in the first compartment. This comes in handy for overnight camping and can be easily removed for hauling a third horse. As for resale, it is no doubt that you would be able to resell it especially to trail or weekend riders. My 2005 Elite two horse trailer was stolen several weeks ago, so there is a market for them.... even for the scum bag that took my trailer (you can see on this site under stolen trailers, Kansas). It's better to get want you want than to say "Wish I would have..." In the long run it is cheaper to get what you want and need since you will not be selling your new trailer for a different one and have to pay all those taxes again. Have fun picking out all the stuff... this is the fun part of buying a new trailer.

I've had both a 2 and a 3 horse. I like the 2 horse because it has more room in the LQ for me. The last one I bought was on this site. It sold for top dollar in less than a week because it was a 2 horse with a nicely finished LQ. There are tons of 3 horse trailers for sale to choose from but not many 2 horse trailers. That is something to think about.

I camp and ride so I don't want a long trailer. I have an 8 ft wide 23 ft 2 horse with a great size LQ. If I had this same trailer in a 3 horse, I couldn't go as many places with ease. I travel alone and seldom take 2 horses.
