I am looking at buying a new truck and they do not advertise the mileage on a diesel. It is a 2005 Dodge 2500 cummins w/6 speed and 3.73 gear ratio. I was wondering what kind of mileage everybody was getting out of these trucks?

I have a 2005 Dodge 2500 diesel with auto trans, But I have a 410 rear end. I get between 16 and 17 miles in town 19 hwy but loaded I only get around 12 mpg. My trailer weighs around 10500 lbs unloaded. My son has a 2005 2500 standard trans with 373 rear end and he gets about the same mileage. But he has over sized tires and a heavy foot.

I have an 2004.5 Dodge 4X4 Quad cab 3500 with the Cummins diesel, auto trans, 3.73 gears, and single rear wheel. I have 18,000 miles on it and get 19-21 mpg hwy (doing 65-70 mph) and I get 15-16 mpg city. Towing 7000-9000 lbs I get around 14 mpg on the hwy (65-70mph).

The newer Cummins engines are built tight from the factory and need some time to break in and get the mileage up. When new, my truck got around 12-13 mpg city and 14-15 hwy. Right about when I got 5000 miles on the odometer the mileage started improving to what I have now. Most owners report similar findings. Hope this helps.

I think it probably depends more on where and how you drive than on the particular vehicle, engine and final drive ratio.
As an example I got a 12.7 average over 3 days driving west from Mass, but once I hit the headwinds of Wyoming it went all to heck, I got into Jackson Hole with a 4 day average of 11.5 - this was going out empty. On the way back with 3 horses and probably another couple of thousand pounds of gear and "household effects" I got back up to 11.7 by the end of day #8.

The trucks are about as fuel efficient as each other and they all weigh about the same, so for a given trailer weight you'd probably burn about the same amount of fuel whichever one you choose. (This will probably draw some brand loyalty based fire.)

BTW, somewhere else I started a thread about the fuel I consumed towing a 2H B/P vs a 4H gooseneck, similar journeys, etc. The BP allowed me 13.7, the much bigger and heavier Gooseneck trailer returned 13.5. So for every $137 I'd spend on fuel with the big trailer the small one could save me $2 of that - whoopieeeee....

I suggest not fretting about fuel mileage, I think they're all so close that you will find other (BETTER) reasons to choose one brand over another, or the other (-:
or the other other.

I am sorry I forgot to say that both trucks are 4 x 4 quads. my truck only has 6000 miles as of now and my son's truck has almost 10,000 miles (Both bought at the same time, I guess you can tell who drives more.) We are in Atlanta and when we are on the hwy its usually on the interstate going 75 to 90 mph. You have to to keep from getting run over. (no trailer attached when going over 75 mph)

I almost forgot, we also have a 2003 3500 quad 4 x 4 dually. It gets about the same mileage as the 2500's. A mile or two less around town but the same on hwy or towing. It has around 30,000 miles on it.

Hope this helps
