I have learned so much about trucks and trailers from all of you that I now need some input. Here goes: I have a 1/2 ton Silverado that will be pulling a 14 foot two horse slant. We have done the following so far to get it ready: Installed break system and weight distribution hitch.

Do I need to install a transmission cooling system? What else, if anything, do I need to do to the truck to get it ready for hauling the trailer and the horses?

Thanks.

oh no! not a half ton........just kidding. sounds like youve got it under control, an external tranmission cooler is usually recommended. you will of course need to check and see if you have one already.  the dealer(if you happen to call them) will likely tell you that you have a trans cooler already(dont know why most chevy dealers are like this), they will usually be refering to the "internal" cooler located in the radiator.  if youre unfamiliar id go to a trans shop and ask them. an "external" cooler will extend the life of your trans., they dont cost that much either.  installed should be around $200, the part itself, if youre mechanically inclined, is about $100 for a good one.

other than that id get that book everyone keeps talking about, and get some practice. be safe and good luck.

After you've installed all the hardware, you need to adjust it.  First with just the trailer empty.  check your hitch against the manufacturer's manual.  Mark all the various spring settings and bolt holes.

Second, with the trailer empty, adjust your brake controller so you get smooth stops without the sense the trailer is "pushing" the truck.  Note or make the settings.

Now you're ready to train your horses to load in the new rig.  Do it when you've got plenty of time and patience.  Don't load for the first time, when you've got somewhere you need to be right now!

While you've got the horses loaded and they're relaxing in the trailer getting used to it, check your hitch again.  adjust as needed.  Note or mark the loaded settings.

Same with the brake controller.  some units need a different setting loaded vs unloaded.  Check your manual.

Drive slowly and carefully, enjoy your new rig.

You didn't say any thing about the year and general condition of your truck so I will state the obvious just in case it would be of help or at least peace of mind.

Are the tires rated at least "D" load range? Are they in good shape? Do you keep them properly inflated/balanced/rotated?

Do you keep your oil & filter changed at proper intervals? Is it full? Is your air filter clean? If it a gasser do your spark plugs & wires need to be replaced? Has your cooling system been flushed on schedule? Is it full and correct mixture? Is it time for hoses & belts to be replaced?

You mentioned installing brake system on trailer, how are the brakes on truck? trailering will cause excessive wear on them and they need to be in good shape.

Is the truck suspension  in good shape? Shocks/springs/steering componets? If any of these are weak or too light of duty, the added weight of trailer could cause you loss of control.

That's a partial list, without knowing year/milage no need to keep on and on like drive train/u joints/rear end lube change ect.

You did ask about tranny cooler, most 1/2 don't come with one (other than in radiator) unless you have tow package. Even those aren't much. Check the link below for real cooling protection, you are going to need it. Has the tranny been flushed regularly?filter changed?

It is a 2002. New brakes and tires. We will mainly be travelling within the state, nothing too far. As far as the tire rating, I will have to check later. The vehicle does have many city miles. The truck does get regular maintenance. We are planning to add the external transmission cooling system. We just want to make it safe for the horses and us. The total weight of the horses will be approximately 2200#.

Thanks.
