Hi,
Can I paint an enamel paint right over the existing enamel in the horse compartment? Is there anything special I need to do as far as surface prep (other than degrease and wash)? It's currently gloomy grey, I'd like to paint it all white. The grey paint is in very good shape, no peeling or other problems with it.

There ARE some rules about this and as I remember it the type of base is what matters, whether the existing or new "enamel" is acrylic or other based - or somesuch. It matters, I do remember that much (-:
You should probably get down to the local body shop supply house and spend some counter time jaw boning someone who knows their stuff. You might be best to take a chip of the old paint with you. Around here (New England) the chain is "FinishMaster", but you can do the yellow pages thing.

Thanks Reg and BigT. I will sand, and I will go by the local paint shop to get some recommendations. Darn, I hoped I didn't have to sand. :-( That sounds like actual work.

Then there are the auto body hobby forums, where the same/similar question has been asked and answered MANY times - I'd guess (-:

Can I paint an enamel paint right over the existing enamel? Your answer is yes indeed you can. Make sure that the surface is good and dry. Another trick you might try is to put one Ounce of black into the white paint at the store and shake well. This will help covering the gray but still be white.
