I purchased an Adam 2 horse bumper pull trailer (new) from a dealer in Lexington, KY back in 2016 or 17. The dealer charged me KY taxes at the time of purchase even though I live in Mississippi. When I returned to MS to get my tag I was told I had to pay the taxes again in MS. MS says KY should have sent the tax money to MS. I have yet to get a tag for my trailer because I refuse to pay the taxes twice. I have even put them on the phone together and no solution was resolved. All they say is I guess you have to pay the taxes in KY and in MS for the same trailer. Does anybody know the rules here. Did KY dealer screw me on this?

Most, if not all, states require sales taxes to be charged, no matter where the buyer lives. So no, I believe the KY dealer probably did exactly as required. But- many states have a reciprocity agreement on taxes. I can't speak to one with Ky/MS, but I'd get with the Miss. Dept of Revenue central office rather than your county official to see if there's any help available. Just my opinion.

The link below explains Kentucky sales tax on horse trailers - page 1, column 1, toward the bottom. The horse trailer you purchased was a bumper pull and is subject to KY sales tax. Gooseneck horse trailers are not subject to KY sales tax.

As a rule of thumb, only a licensed dealer can assign an MSO to someone else. All other entities must posess a valid title in order to transfer ownership. The state of your new owner will be the decising factor in that. But I believe in all of the SE U.S. states, yes you'll need to title it first.
