Now I am getting more confused.  My call to Toyota parts department said I can pull 6500#s in addition to vehicle weight.  Again this is a 1999 Land Cruiser.

230-hp, 4.7-liter V-8; 4-speed automatic w/OD, 4WD; & Class IV (whatever that means).

Does this makes sense?

yes it does, that puts the GCVWR in the 11500 region. dont get hung up on the class iv hitch, its easiest just to pay attention to the weight rating in pounds. when a manuf. gives a max trailer weight it is generally the base vehicle curb weight with a 150 (or so) driver subracted from the GCVWR....so reversing the equation your curb of 5115 + 6500 trailer = 11615 GCVWR. be aware however that the 6500 rating is most likely with a weight distrubting hitch. some of this info should be in the owners manual, may i suggest a look through it? if these numbers are close youll have no problem with a 2 horse bumper pull(usually around 2500) and one horse (1000) =3500. im pulling a 2 horse slant w/ dressing room (3500 + 2 horses + tack = 6000)with a similar max trailer rating. i agree with gabz about the book, i would also seek out an individual with towing experiance, preferably with horses, and get some pointers. be safe.

That's probably right. The LC is quite a large SUV-type of thing right? (Here in "Detroit" land, we rarely see anything other than domestic built SUVs)

So - if you can tow a 6500 pound load, and you want to haul 1 horse only, all of the time, and NEVER haul 2 horses, you can look for a trailer that weighs about 5000 pounds, empty. However, you might want to consider the "80% for live load" safety factor - which would mean you only want to haul 5200 pounds. With 1, 1100 pound horse, you can tow a trailer that weighs 4100 pounds empty. If you want to haul 2 horses, and the tack and hay, etc., then you want to look for a trailer that weighs 2700 pounds or less, empty. Be sure that the trailer is tall enough inside for the horse(s).

: ) Did you find a book yet?

Then, you need enough hitch for the maximum towed weight. Even if you get under 5000 pounds of towed weight, you might still want a WDH - especially if the wheelbase (length) of the LC is less than say 120" ... (the shorter the wheelbase of the tow vehicle, the more unruly the handling can be) or WDH with anti-sway bars.

As I'm sure you have read - horses will move around and are top heavy - very bad things for a towed load.

Momofahorselover ... We're all (Gabz ,Chadsalt,& I ) telling you the same thing ...

Another subject, if you're hauling one horse in your two horse straight load, you'll want to load him on the driver's side of the trailer.  This will help with trailer stability, because most roads are crowned in the middle to shed water.  And second, if you should run slightly off the edge of the road, the horse's weight will still be on the road.

Good excercise for 17 year year old!  She can figure out how much horse & tack & stuff weighs --- then I will add another 50# for the weight I am gaining sitting in front of computer and eating!  Talked to husband who has the LC out of town and he will check rating on ID tag.

At least we are back to pulling a horse vs a pygmy goat (much harder to ride in reinings)

Just ordered both books from Amazon.  Good point about horses moving...maybe I should be looking into sedatives for horse and myself -- and let daughter drive!

Toyota parts guy also tells me Toyota no longer mfgs the tow package for 99 Landcruiser, they would go with Rigid brand Class III rated at 5000#s

$290 parts including wiring harness + $360 labor.  This is between San Francisco and San Jose, Ca .... prices are generally higher than southern Cal. in most things particularly labor.

I don't know ... my pygmy does fantastic sliding stops... at least I think that's what she's doing... maybe she's just sitting down while she's walking? (I've been told she looks like a mobile footstool...)

Reining, eh? I recently got involved with Reined Cow Horse... (NRCHA stuff)... My horse practices the cow work on the full-size and pygmy goats.

Now dad would probably prefer to be feeding/housing/training pygmy goat - though he does have a soft spot for the mare - the one female in his life who doesn't talk too much!

Thanks to all who took time to point a total trailer neophyte in right direction!
