Does anyone know where I could get some Rubber Strips to screw onto a ramp??  My horses are having a little trouble walking up and down my ramp and I don't want them to get injured, I thought of screwing some Rubber Stips along the ramp?  Any Ideas?

Thanks,

I don't know where you are, but you can go to a Farm store like Big R or Farm and Fleet. They usually carry 4ftx6ft sheets of rubber of varying thickness for stalls.

And then just cut into strips??  Would Tractor Supply have something like that?

Do you think this idea would even work?

I'd just replace the WHOLE rubber ramp mat. I think there might be MORE risk to adding the cross strips unless you can do it perfectly and know they'll hold, know the horses won't trip if you back them out, etc.
B'sides, they form damms when you try to wash the ramp off (-:

I would think that Tractor supply would carry them. Like the suggestion from Reg, I would put the whole thing on as apposed to just a piece of it, but you could cut it into strips with a utility knife if that is what you really want.

I'm with Reg, you don't want to add bumps to the ramp you want to add traction.  Replace the old mat with a new one that has wet/dry traction.

Is your trailer mat slick when wet ? When dry ?
Are you washing it thoroughly (and letting it dry) ?
It certainly shouldn't need replacement (or trip bars) if it is new/new'ish.
Are you parking it in a place that makes the ramp unreasonably steep when you load ? You might try using a natural bank or earth berm.

If you need new mat I suggest/recommend the kind that has what appear to be fine cuts across it in both directions. Get the one that is HARD to clean all the little bits of grass and stuff (that has been through the intestine) out of it.
Regular stall mat would probably work, if it has a pattern.

I agree with changing out the mat.  My 84 Trailet had a slick mat, so slick that even just dampness outside would make it slick to load/unload.  I liked the material that Equispirit had on their ramps so I called the parts department and got a new surface (that collects just about everyhting, to include the digested hay/grain!!!).

You can probably order it through any trailer dealer.. but my horses are now more confident to load.  I think if the ramp is slick the rubber bumpers could add to horse indecision and loss of confidence to load.

You might be able to ask your current dealer for an upgrade to the better mat or if not, it was worth the money to upgrade to the safer stuff.

Thank You to all!  I'm a little frustrated cause its a brand new 2005 and I have only used it twice, but I just want to replace it and be done with it.  I love the trailer but I have never used a ramp before so I guess I will go through some things like this.  Its a Reverse Load so the ramp is on the side.  And my horse does in fact haul 100% better in the reverse load!!  Which is why I want to get the ramp thing panned out.

Thanks,

I'd get back to (at ?) the dealership and if necessary the manufacturer.
I have side ramps on my 4-Star, there has NEVER been a problem with traction, wet or dry.

4-Star WILL sell raw materials as well as parts.
If Platinum won't take care of you call 4-Star with the ramp dimensions and ask for their non-skid ramp mat, you might have to buy it to the next foot measurement up - they won't/can't send you the adhesive.

Ooops, I just noticed something.
REVERSE LOAD with SIDE RAMP.
This probably means you're walking them up and then wheeling around to back them in ? Sort of/kind of like loading into the rear facing front stalls of a head to head ?
If so (...and I'm NOT talking down to you...) are you SURE the horse is getting a fair chance to get into the trailer before you're starting the turn ?
e.g. is he/she having to go up the ramp a little bit diagonally near the top and losing confidence (and grip) because of this ?

Just a thought - and I think I had that tendency the first few times using the side ramp and turning them before backing 'em in (-:

No they don't have to turn around at all they walk in and and are facing the correct direction, no turning around at all.

A couple of them walk up flat footed and do fine, but a couple of them walk up on their toes and slip.

That seems odd...
So are the horses straight across the trailer when loaded ?
I had thought it was a slant, for which they would either have to turn when they get in, or go up a side ramp diagonally.

So, two of them are fine, two get tippy toed and slip... hmmmm, maybe it is something other than the ramp mat ?

The first horse walks up the ramp and goes all the way in the back of the trailer, Head is facing the drivers side head is facing slat towards the back of the trailer and so on. The last horse walks straight up the ramp and into the stall.

I love the trailer it is great!
