I am thinking of starting a small horse hotel within the next year or so. We currently live in Mid-Michigan, but are considering moving to SD, southern MN, southwestern WI, mid-northern IN, IA. . .we're pretty open. We're thinking of considering accesibility to an interstate, proximity to horse trails, prettiness of the area, along with our personal concerns (price, etc.) when looking for property.
If anyone has advice on location, considerations for running one or anything else, I surely would appreciate the input.

The only other thing I would consider is to look at the books that are available listing all the horse stabling options in your region. Then try to find a place that isn't too near any of the other ones listed. It's no good to have 3 places in one town and nothing for the next 400 miles....just my thoughts. Good luck on this adventure! It sounds like fun and interesting meeting horse people from all over.

This is something that my husband and I would like to do too - in the future. You can also look at purchasing an existing one that already has clients. I found one near Custer, South Dakota not too long back. Great area for riding. Good luck.

Use the search words "horse motels" on your search engine to check these out nationwide. Some have informative web sites, which could be very helpful to you. I would also visit a number of them and ASK QUESTIONS!
We used the online search to find accomodations for our horse when we brought him to the East Coast from Colorado. On our last night we stayed at a very nice farm near Lexington, Kentucky, which we found on the internet. The place was FIRST CLASS. When it was suggested to the owner that rates could be easily raised, his reply, "I keep it cheap and full," which it was! It was $15/night ( for the horse)!

Thanks Brenda, we had stayed at a wonderful horse B&B when hauling from MN to NY a few years ago. That's what gave me the idea. I had not thought of checking out individual sites to get info though - cool! Thank you!Nan

Rick with Huckleberry Stables in Pineville, MO, would be a good person to ask too. He has had his own operation for over a year now (has worked for other horse camps/operations before, including a stint in Belize). He would be a good person to get some advice from. His website is www.huckleberrystables.com
