I am shopping for a three horse gooseneck trailer, and am curious about other's experiences and why you chose one style over the other - bus windows vs. open slats on the butt side. I definitely want drop down doors with bars on the head side, but am considering both options for the butt.

I chose enclosed trailer over open/stock because I utilized the back area as sleeping quarters for my kids. Inside also stays clean(er) and dry when trailer is setting in the pasture waiting to be used next. Cold climate should play into your choice also.

I have to agree with Bill. We've owned both and I like the bus windows just for the fact that the inside of the horse compartment stays dry. We don't sleep back there as we have LQ's (almost) but we do use the 1st stall as a storage area. The other trailer we had had the slats and even with the plexiglass it still leaked. As far as air flow goes I think they would both flow the same. If we could've afforded it, we would've have gotten drops on both sides. That's the way to go IMHO.

It's a personal preference over what works best for you. I like the bus windows and having the horse area totally enclosed. The open slats leave the trailer open to not only the weather elements but also insects as I have heard of bees making nests in the horse area. Not a good thing! You can keep the plexiglass in the slats all the time but there will be less air flow coming through unlike the screened bus windows.

I have the slats on the butt side and have been glad of it. A friend of mine has the drop downs at the head, vents in the roof, and busses at the rear and still her horses get sweaty. Mine are dry. I do wish my trailer could stay enclosed when not in use just to keep the rain, leaves, etc. out.
