I've got a friend who is contemplating the use of this for an outdoor arena.

http://www.rammfence.com
http://centaurhtp.com

Anyone using it and have good/bad experiences? Only major down side I can see is that there's no boards to sit up on...

Thanks,

LAXPatrick

My trainer put telephone polls or cut off tree trunks to sitting height near her arena. The horses also used them as scratching posts, we covered them in carpet and stapled it up. You could also buy some bleachers from the local youth soccer league. Just watch out for the bees and wasps!

Both fences are a variation on theme from Hi-Tensile wire fence. I am a big fan of Hi-Tensile wire fencing and have used it around livestock and horses since the early 80's and have had really good success. I have had no major problems with using Hi-Tensile for horses and I know that some people call it the "egg slicer" fence. I hate to say this, but most of the problems I've seen with Hi-Tensile and horses have been associated with Thoroughbreds. The suppliers that you are looking at make a coated or armored wire with a plastic coating. The only question I've ever asked about coated wire fence is the UV factor. On my own property, I've fenced in my horses with board fencing across the front and plain old Hi-Tensile wire fencing every where else. I use 5 wires and make 2 of them hot with electric. Happy trails.

I have the centaur fencing I like it. This last week one of the horses reared and got hung up on the top rail of the fence. He kicked for about 20 seconds until he was able to get over the fence. He rubbed off some skin but was OK . hate to think what would of happened if it was a wood board fence.

I HAVE HAD MY RAMM FENCE FOR A YEAR NOW AND I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT AT ALL. MY WALKERS TOUCHED IT ONCE AND THEY STAY CLEAR NOW. I HARDLY EVEN TURN IT ON NOW. I USED THE RAMM WIRE WHITE AND GOT MY T-POST COVERS AND MY CONNECTORS FROM ELECTROBRAID BECAUSE I LIKED THEIRS BETTER. I GET WONDERFUL COMMENTS ON MY FENCING AND THE MAINTAINCE IS NOTHING. I EVEN TAKE THE THREAD COVERED WIRING AND WILL FENCE OFF AREAS THAT HAVE NO ELECTRICITY AND MY HORSES WON'T CHALLENGE IT. I FIND IT TO BE A WONDERFUL CHOICE. GOOD LUCK.

I have used cameo fencing for the last four years with no problems.  Our friend has had it for the past ten.   It is a great fence. Very safe. Cost effective and  Easy to install. I run five strands.  I know people that use it on arenas also.  We get compliments on it all the time.

Well worth looking at.

I installed the Spur fence 5 years ago and am still very happy with it.  The only problem I have had is the corner posts have split where the nails where driven for the wratchet assembly.  (this is HTP fence by the way)  Also  the entire system rides on the corners.  If you don't do it right you will have big problems.
