PLEASE, help make my mind up!

Ordering a new trailer this week and trying to decide to spend the bucks and get the onboard generator or just go portable!

Now the option is 3.6LP or a the 4.0 gas for $600. more. If we go portable the total trailer price will be about $6500. cheaper after buying a portable unit (because there is no need for a hay rack, that would never be used)

Have had both onboard units before, kinda leaning toward the LP because of convenience for the better half and not having to carry extra gas around. The trailer will have the large LP bottles and we already have 2 extra bottles from a previous trailer. We are in North Texas so high altitude or below freezing weather is no issue for us.

Only thing I hate about the portable unit is hauling it on the bed of the truck.

Well, for me. If I'm using it fairly regularly, and/or want it easy to use get the built in. Now- If I use that one regularly, I'd get gas because for me it is easier to fuel. If I only use it occasionally I'd go LP so as I didn't have to worry about old gas. These newer gensets don't tolerate old gas at all.

Thank you for the reply. Most likely will only be used maybe 1 or 2 times per month at most for right now....

Main reason I was really leaning to go ahead and spend the money is IF we ever need to sell it, I'm thinking it would sell faster with a generator. Only based with current market I have been watching.

Really wanted a used trailer but everything weare looking at have been in terrible condition. And the worst ones are on dealers lots! Really amazing how they list trailers for sale and no even get the cleaned up or checked out before posting them.

FWIW- that resale isn't universal with a genset. I'm a trail rider in TN and everywhere I go has plugs. So I don't want a gen period, and won't pay more for it. But- I have friends that rodeo, and will not have a trailer without one. But they use 4H, and my trail ride friends and I use a 3H. So go figure.

Well thats something to think about for sure. Probably 70% of the places we go have hookups.
I was mainly going off of what I was told about the last 2 LQ's we had and used as a trade in. "well, if it had a generator mounted we would give way more for it" blah, blah, blah ....
We plan on buying out right. (Well via loan)

Thanks for the help, if we opt out on the generator and hay rack that saves us $9500. off the top. So I could tuneup the onan p4500 that we have in storage or buy another new portable. Either way is much cheaper than the 9500.!

Thanks

I'm sure it helps resale dollars, but I bet it doesn't get close to getting you $9500 back.

I believe the Onan 9500 has a remote start.  Mount it on the roof and you are good to go.

It is not a Onan 9500, it is a Onan 3.6lp and the cost for it and all the so called mounting equipment installed is $9500.! Or for another $600. I could go with the 4.0 gas Onan!

Sorry - your one post did say it was an Onan P4500 - not P9500,  Both has a remote start

I personally would rather have a beefy dc system and a bit of solar. make all the lights dc and add an inverter for everything you cant run dc. Add a plug to run the Ac and for most applications you will be much better off.
