I have a 2014 Lakota. Nothing has been changed in anyway and I was shocked a couple times when plugged into shore power. I changed the sourse of power and used a non-contact voltage meter and it's still hot. Not a happy camper. Anyone have this issue? Thanks

That is dangerous. No one should have this problem. It could be Your trailer or power cord is mis-wired. Or a device or wire has shorted to ground. Did your cord lose its grounding prong? Don't ignore it, get it fixed.

It's all there. Guess I'll try to borrow a cord and find out. I probably won't be that lucky and expect it's going to cost a fortune to fix. Thanks.

I'd suggest getting one of these. First- plug it into the outlet the trailer will plug into. If you are using a 30 amp plug, there is a cheap adapter that changes it to the smaller plug. I think you can get it at the same big box store you buy the tester.

Southwire Analog 120-Volt GFCI Receptacle Tester

If it shows good there (many will not), plug it into an outlet in the trailer. I'd suggest keeping it plugged into an outlet on the trailer all the time. Just good insurance.
Now- like HP said, check your power cord where it plugs into the trailer very well. If it is worn, or not locked in right you may not be getting a solid connection. It is certainly possible that something in the trailer has changed to "charge" the skin, but it is very uncommon. It takes a wire to have become chafed or penetrated by a screw or nail to do that. And usually when that happens the breaker trips first. We have seen a number of campground/barn receptacles that have connections reversed.

Take it to a Lakota dealer or RV dealer and have this checked.
A small spark could ignite any leaking propane. Or the trailer short could short out someone’s pacemaker if they touch your trailer.
Worse possible would be your horse steps on to the trailer, gets his front feet charged. Then, the only smart thing left to do is launch as hard as possible, either tackling horses ahead of him or making your trailer a convertible. Neither sound inexpensive and imagine getting him back in a trailer again would be impossible.

Charmer88 ... Swapping cords is just delaying a fix. You don't know enough to trace the problem. How do you know if the cord changes anything ? Touch the trailer while standing in a puddle ? Yikes !!

It may not be expensive to fix. just depends on what's the cause of problem. Even if it is expensive, what is your life or someone else's life worth ?

RTsmith … over at HEF, there's a discussion of advice given to unskilled posters.

The concern is a posted procedure might have dangers the unskilled won't recognize, while familiar to the experienced. Your tester is valuable to someone that understands what the device is indicating. I don't think the OP in this case knows what an "open neutral" means or how to correct it.

If I changed and checked a cord I would use the non contact test light to see if its charged. It's a process of elimination and that is an easy check and doesn't hurt to know before taking it in. Luckily I rarely connect to shore power. Thank you!

Thanks everyonefor the advice. I did check my outlet and it's fine. Haven't taken the trailer in yet but will take it to a horse trailer service department couple of hours away. Visibly everything looks good, secure, sound. I'll let you know what they say.

I felt this issue was of such importance that I sent Lakota an email.
I am a Lakota owner, they helped me, they are waiting on you.
Email:

lakotatrailers.service@gmail.com

I did not get a phone number.
Please contact them, they are good people, they care about their product.
Tell them Dana from Pataskala Ohio sent you.

HossPuller- yes you are right. Read that thread myself coincidentally. And electricity gets dicey quick. Thx for the further input.

To the owner- taking it to a service departtment is absolutely the best thing. But, be sure it is in their realm of service. There are horse trailer service departments in my area that are great welders and fabricators, but no experience in the RV side. You need a RV tech. So before driving it over, just make sure they fit. Many do, some don't.

With all due respect to Lakota, this isn't a phone fix. It will be hands on. The shop is the proper route this time.

HEF????

Col. Smith is correct, Lakota wants to send you to a service center that can fix your issue and make sure it is done correctly the first time. Col. Smith’s dealership would be an excellent choice to do it right the first time. I assure you, he will treat you right and is one of the most interesting (I think I can call him this) cowboys to listen to tell a good tale.

(He rides mules)

If I were to take a guess, Col. Smith is referring to Don Smith @ Dixie Horse & Mule in Wicksburg, Al. He is a neat gentleman, and I am sure has been on more than one mule. :)  I'm certain his crew can sort through whatever issue you have.

RTSmith (myself), is
Richard Smith @ Select Trailer Co. in Shelbyville, TN. I have been a friendly cometitor with Don for close to 20 years, but we aren't related (not as we know of anyway). And yes, here our LQ/RV skillset runs very deep and handling an issue like hot skin is not a problem. For example, we have a HIPOT tester like the factories use, where we can charge the hot line of the power cord with 1080 volts, and check the nuetral and ground lines looking for any bleed through. In the past, we've built LQs and used it for final QC.

Lastly- HEF is heavyequipmentforums.com   A lot of info shared there, but like here sometimes unskilled peoples' testing methods can be very dangerous. Question there came up about liability for giving advice on a forum that resulted in an inury.

I talked to Lakota and I have the non-contact voltage tester and the outlet tester shown in this thread. If the recepticle shows the correct circuit and it does....
1st test by changing out the shore cord with someone to see if the cord is bad.
2nd it could be the recepticle if the outlet isn't the issue. The two most common reasons for a hot skin.
Beyond this yes it could be a wire. I have a choice of taking it to a Lakota dealer or to any place with RV service if it's not the cord.
Thanks for the ideas. It will be serviced soon.

Yes, I was referring to Dixie Horse and Mule in Alabama, being just a 2Lt I always refer to him as Col. Smith, he has rank lots of rank on me.
