I have an 11 yr old quarter horse qelding that has white feet. The pad on his right front foot grows fast and acutually extends below the hoof wall. The pad is soft and easily rasped but it bleeds when rasped down even with the hoof walls. Seems to be getting worse over the last two years. He is gimpy or flat lame after resetting his front shoes. Anyone seen this ? Suggestions appreciated.

Hi there, without seeing your horse I can ONLY speculate.
As a long time barefoot horseowner and trimmer, the ONLY time I have encountered this is when the quality of the hoof wall was so poor that it could not grow past the sole. The horse is essentially relying 100% on the sole for weight bearing and protection of the coffin bone. The reason that you are seeing blood is because the sole has no callous and you are rasping into live viable tissue,,,,,,,STOP DOING THIS . THE SOLE SHOULD NEVER BE PAIRED OR RASPED INTO THE LIVE TISSUE, THE LIVE TISSUE IS NEITHER DENSE ENOUGH NOR THICK ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE COFFIN BONE OR PROTECT THE DIGITAL CUSHION.
Have this horses feet x-rayed as soon as possible and have the vet work with a competent hoof care professional,,,,,,notice I did not say farrier,,,,this issue goes beyond common shoeing or trimming,,,,this horse needs hoof rehab.
At the very least, this horse should probably be in hoof boots 24/7 until there is sufficient new growth,
