you can, but the less white you sand off the better your paint will adhere, the white paint that comes on the aluminum sheet is electronically bonded to the the sheet so it sticks much better than normal paint.

You can paint aluminum using aircraft or marine products. As was stated, the most important process is the preparation, which includes an absolutely clean surface, and a good epoxy metal primer. Anything less will result in a short paint lifespan. Automotive paints can be used for the final surfacing in a single or two part application. Most paint stores will tint the paint to whatever colour you desire or to match the original. The primer can also be tinted, which may reduce the amount of final colour coats.
