We dropped my husband's car off at the local Ford dealer for a recall yesterday and somehow ended up looking at new trucks. We currently have a 2001 F-350 with the legendary 7.3 liter PowerStroke. It has less than 100K miles in it, has been ridiculously well maintained and has a set of Timbrens on it as well. That being said, it does need paint, but has never had body work and has no rust anywhere. The dealership low balled us without seeing the truck. I know that we either need to drive this truck until it dies or trade it while it still has value. We would be trading up to a flatbed dually that will make hooking up easier as we age, and based on the amount of time we keep vehicles, last until at least one of us is 70 years old. How do you make a decision???

If you like the current truck (I had a 7.3L also and regretted the day I sold it until I got my new truck a few months ago) then why not just put $3000 into a flatbed for it and be done. I have a 2015 F350 with the 6.7L (I think) engine and it's a dream to pull a trailer. I did get a chassis cab so that I could put a flatbed on it for ease of use. The only bad thing about the new truck is that I didn't win the Powerball so I still have to work and can't drive it coast to coast. I did slip off the bumper portion of the bed and hung a rib on the removable side rails...NOT FUN but my fault. Do what you want and what you can afford, it's your money.

Try to advertise and sell privately. In my area of Ohio, we have so many people looking for the 7.3 powerstroke and with that low mileage, I don't see why you would have any problem selling it for a lot more that a dealership will give you.

Well...you are looking at acquiring a new depreciating asset...after you have already eaten the depreciation on your 2001...used vehicles are assigned values in the KBB, et cetera...so even without seeing your vehicle there is a basic range of value from beaten to mint...when you say there is no rust...have you examined your truck's frame?? Also, how many miles are you planning on putting on your truck until one of you reach 70??

I would keep the 01 7.3, pull the bed off, clean and paint the frame and engine compartment, replace hoses, belts, brakes, lay on some new color and mount a new Hillsboro aluminum flatbed....!.

DITTO Rentento. You know what you have (one of the most reliable drive trains available), it's paid for, and it can be easily modified to any configuration you wish. For a few new monthly truck payments, your truck can be upgraded and refreshed. Regular maintenance can easily promote your truck's life span to double or triple its present mileage. Your savings over a new purchase will be considerable.

Thank you boys for your opinions! The truck has been WELL gone over this year, frame and all, and other than paint needs exactly nothing done to it. It has been a great truck, I have owned it since new, and has been extremely well maintained. Looks like I will be keeping it! :)

We LOVED our 7.3 diesel F-350 trucks!! Then, we went in to those newer nightmare engines. We had the puking antifreeze, the faulty engine bolts, the EGR delete.... the list goes on. When we had brakes fail not once, but three times (fully loaded and pulling), we took it to the dealership. They told us that nothing was wrong. We sold it with a caveat, and bought a small Kenworth Western Hauler to pull with. Happy now. Done with trying to pull big trailers with a pick up truck.

I will give you my 2 cents as I've been there. I currently own 3 7.3's and love each of them. Miles between 140k and 200k. All have been great trucks! When I tried to trade another one I figured out that Ford dealers aren't as excited about owning 7.3 diesels. By far my best luck has been outright sale. More trouble, but more money in my pocket, and new friendships developed from the sale. With that being said I've also tried the mini semi truck and hated it. Just as many mechanical issues and nobody wants to work on them! (No dealers where I live) I have 2 6.7 Ford duallys and love them. One has 70,000 on it. 67,000 of those miles have been pulling 4h 34'lq trailer. Been to shop 1 time for unscheduled maintenance. Other has 92,000 on it, used on farm, and it too has had 1 unscheduled trip to shop. They pull SO much better than the older ones I hardly ever hook a trailer to my 7.3's any more. I'm not gonna take my money with me and my kids can earn it just like I did. No regrets with the new trucks for me!!! Oh and the farm f350 has an aluminum Hillsboro and it's great. Good luck
