33 yr old buckskin, Poco Bueno foundation Quarter Horse mare. I rode her up to 2 weeks before she had a stroke. Good health, good legs; 1000's of miles of beautiful trails. I miss her terribly with a smile in my heart.

My old man (Appy/TB/QH) is coming on 28. He is perfectly sound and will keep up and pass everyone. He is still out there running and bucking with the younger ones. I knew this QH/Arab mare that was put down at 33. She had injured a tendon in her back leg, but that never slowed her down. She was never in any pain from it, you just couldn't use her as a jumper or barrel racer (which you should not do at that age anyway). I was kind of upset when the owner put her down for basically no reason, I would have taken her.

My vet has a +-40 yr old pony. He bought 30 years ago at the age of 10 (so he estimated then). His kids and grand kids have learned to ride on this pony. Now the old man has the run of the place. Old little shetland.

I have a 29 year old TWH mare that is doing super! She has some arthritis and her eyes are a little foggy but she keeps up with my other horses great. Not to mention she is the queen B and fat and sassy. I retired her from the showring when she was 25. There's a gal down the road who put her 47 year old shetland down last year due to his kidneys giving out on him. Amazing..........

Have a 29 year old saddle horse; he's 13.2 hands, holding at about 800 pounds. His primary function is to guard Pixley (a mare) who is his dearly beloved; she's only 14.

Our oldest is a 29+ arab gelding who we have almost lost a few times. He is swaybacked and his eyes are cloudy but he is the sweetest horse that I have ever had. I can put both my daughters on his back and not worry a bit. I often wonder what his life has been like. We have only had him for 3 years and plan to let him live out his days doing whatever he wants to.

Currently we have a 23 year old QH and a 21 year old appy, but the man we bought the QH from had a 34 year old QH that they just had to put down last year.

I have a 20 year old Arabian. Still going strong and a fun, fun ride. Also a 30 year old Shetland pony that I use for childrens birthday parties. He can't see too well, but still rules the roost.

The oldest we ever owned was a 30 yr old barrel horse named Estes. We ended up giving her to a young girl whose family had a farm, but couldn't afford a horse. I haven't seen her in 2 years, but Estes was 34 the last time I saw her, and doing fine. We have a friend that has a 39 year AQHA gelding that has taught 4 generations how to barrel race, they just put him out to pasture 2 years ago.

The oldest horse i own now is my 24 year old Quarter Horse Butermilk Buckskin Gelding. He does Barrel Racing and other Speed Events, and is still going. BUT he is going to retire after November 14, 2004.

I had a POA mare that my parents bought for me when I was little, and then we sold her. I ended up buying her back when I was older and I just finally had to put her down a couple years ago. She was thirty-two, and the best pony you could imagine. I won several shows with her in pleasure, halter, trail, and speed. She did it all. I finally had to let her go, after two vet opinions that she wasn't going to make the winter. She had suddenly got really skinny on me, and I could not get weight back on her, turns out she only had four teeth left. Just wasn't nothing there. 37

My mom's 1980 buckskn QH mare is the oldest that we have(and ever owned). She will be 25 in April, 2005. She might be older but she is a very sweet mare! She's out of an AQHA Champion(Pawnees Hawk), and is very calm with a great personality!

My 56-year-old husband's 4-H horse, which they brought to Ohio from Missouri as a colt, died at 37 1/2 in the mid-'90s. She had free access to pasture or barn and would sometimes come in at feeding time covered with snow. Rarely needed a vet. My husband was afraid she'd outlive him!

Our oldest (confirmed age) was a Morgan/Arab gelding my mom had when I was a kid. He retired at 34 (never was kid safe) and passed away at 36.
Then there was this old guy:
Nobody knew exactly how old Cochise was, nor what mix he was, but we knew he was in his late thirties at least when he died. The photo was taken in 1969, and he'd been in the family for over 30 years.
If nothing else, I think he'd easily win the "Ugliest Horse That Ever Lived" award.

My first horse lived to be 30,she died in 1985,I bought my next horse an appy,she was 8 years old, and she will be 28 next year, and sometimes she acts like she is 3 years old. I have another horse, but she is just 14, I still ride the appy, and will until she can't hold me anymore. Sandy

My moms horse that she had as a kid is still alive, he now lives with my aunt. He is coming 37 this year and they still ride the ol fart! Fat and happy, he is a qh/appy cross, and don't tell him he's 37!6

I have a quarter horse gelding who wil be 34 next month. My 12 year old son has been showing him in 4-H each year and last year received hi-point at the fair for his age division on him....pleasure, horsemanship, trail, poles and barrels. April 2nd my fiance and I went on an organized all day trail ride and guess who my fiance rode? Yup! I watch him very close (the horse) Ha! and he gets special feed soaked in water. Noone believes by his looks that he is that old. When I bought him at 8yrs old the people said he was crazy and should be put down. (There are only problem people and not problem horses). My 32 yr old pony, which I won my first blue ribbon on, passed away in February.

We had a 34 year old quarter pony named penny. We met a lady last year at a 4H show that had this pony when penny was 3years old. We gave the pony to her to retire at her ranch. She is doing great and the owner is happier than ever. It is a great story for both.

I had an old Palomino Quarter Horse. She died of colic in her mid 30's. No confirmed age but everyone knew who she was. I rescued her as a neglected horse, but found out that she was a famous local show horse in our area. All the locals knew her and could verify how long she was around for. A old man, friend of ours, confirmed he owned her as a two year old. Another friend of ours owned Hickory, an old Quarter Horse, he lived until his mis 30's also. I believe he was either 35 or 36 when he passed away. I have a 24 year old quarter horse. She has a good long life ahead of her too. I have retired her except when my 3 year old nephew comes around. She is amazing with children.
