Me and my wife go trail riding for several days every month in Virginia/Blue Ridge Mountains.
Normal we keep an eye on the main trail, just in case we can't find the way back.
I just ordered the Garmin eTrex 20, just in case we really go from the main trails...any advice if I need additional maps for Virginia or what Topo map I need to purchase and how to use it.

congrats on your new GPS. I am sure that once you learn to use it , it will eliminate a lot of stress when you are trail riding. My opinion is to read the manual that comes with it and start using it. Use it around the house, when you go to town and every chance you get so you are familiar with it. There are some good videos on "youtube" also . Just get familiar setting waypoints and how the tracking feature works. Always, always , always carry an extra set of batteries with you. We have been using a GPS unit for years when trail riding and it has kept us from getting disoriented many times.

I have the Garmin Etrex 30 and was disappointed with the manual that came with it. I contacted Garmin and was told I would have to purchase the full manual if I wanted it. I got familiar with it as was stated just by using it around the house and every time I could ride in the passenger seat of the truck. Once I got familiar with it I really like it and it can do a lot for me. I bet once you "play" with it a while you will like it also. Good Luck

If your the techy type, you or anybody can make your own topo custom maps for the area that you want. Here is a link to a site that gives this info.
It is kinda difficult to understand at first.

I would purchase one of the 24K Topo maps that Garmin sells that includes the area you ride the most. I would also get the CD not the download as that way you can use it for more than one device. You can go online to get the manual for it for free and print out the pages that you need most. The trick is to use it regularly. I have a Montana 650t that I use every ride. Mostly, I just want to know my mileage but I've used it for geo-caching too and to know how fast I went or how high, etc. The map is expensive but purchased this way, you will have it forever and be able to use it with any GPS device. Enjoy your new toy!

Very nice. I didn't realize they had the microSD now. Very handy. Good luck with your unit! The map will make it much more useful to you. It's well worth the money, I think :)
