Somehow we managed to lose the tack room key to my 2002 Chaparral horse trailer, and of course the tack room is locked.Since they don't make Chaparral's anymore I'm at a loss as to what to do about getting a new key. Obviously I could call a locksmith but before I shell out the $$$ for that I want to see if any of you guys have a suggestion. I tried to pick the lock and let me tell you they make it look a lot easier on tv, I don't know the company who made the lock, since that info is on the inside of the tack room, but there is a 4 digit code underneath the lock on the outside. Could this be helpful?

That code, the brand of lock and a locksmith will easily get you a new key. Many of these locks share a key. Fortunately most people don't realize there only so many cuts that can be made on a key that small. If you have a GOOD locksmith in your area he may recognize the code and be able to provide a key with out the brand.

Any competent locksmith should be able to get you a new key for $5 to $10

I hate to say it but most trailers are keyed the same, unless someone has added an aftermarket deadbolt....  Check with a friend before wasting money on a locksmith...  One of the keys to my 2004 Sundowner fits a neighbors 2012 Cimarronas well as a 2001 Exiss SS300 that I just bought from the auction.  Also the keys to my S&H steel trailer fits the other lock on my Sundowner too....

That's what I'm trying to do right now - unfortunately none of my friends have keys to their tack rooms either. I was thinking the same could be said for camper keys, so I'm going to see if I can find someone with a similar key.

Exactly. A good locksmith will probably recognize the code and know what lock it is.

do you have a horse trailer sales lot near you? Most have a set of keys that will open about any trailer per the little number on the lock

I sure wouldn't spend a lot of time chasing others keys in hopes of finding one that fits. Hook the trailer up and drive over to your local locksmith.  I've had to do this a few times over the years with various equipment trailers on construction sites.  It's not a big deal or very expensive to have the locksmith pick the lock and cut a couple of new keys.

Even if you fin a key that fits, You still need to go get a couple of new keys cut, So just go straight to the locksmith and get it all done in one stop.

I haven't called this number in a while: 800-837-2505 so I don't know if it still works. Leave them a message with your lock number and they will send you a key(s) and a bill. You can tell who made your lock, then you can google them for a key number.

Look on the front face of the lock itself, is there a number on it? and if so what is it?
