I have 7000# axles and 16 inch wheels on my Platinum trailer.   I am thinking of changing to a 17.5 or a 19.5 wheel and tire combo.   I have room between the axles and in the wheel well. Has anyone done this?  Are there any drawbacks other than cost?

A 17.5" tire upgrade uses tires that are a Load Range H rated at 4805 per tire, which means that you could conceivably overload your 7000 lb axles...we tend to have 10,000 or 12,000 lb axles when upgrading to 17.5" tires...so that the tires are still the failure point...:)

I changed to 19.5's about 18 months ago. Love them. You have more options for tires with the 19.5's than the 17.5's.

I changed to 19.5's about 18 months ago. Love them. You have more options for tires with the 19.5's than the 17.5's. My 19.5's and kelly springfield tires were very reasonable. I got about 2 1/2 years on Goodyear G614's and hope to double that with the 19.5's. They don't get near as hot when loaded as the 16" tires did. I have decreased the pressure in the tires to about 90#'s cold as opposed to running 110 # in the 16" tires so I am not maxing out the weight capacity. I just like the extra safety factor. This is where I found info out.http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/1205dp_19_5_inch_vision_tires_and_wheels_one_year_later/
