Last summer we built a new barn and for the longest time the horses never pooped in the barn and I was a happy girl.

Then we had a winter storm and the horses stayed in more and started pooping in the barn. I don't have anything to haul manure in but a wheel barrel and we had 6 inches of snow so I ended up piling the manure in one area of the barn. Then the horse started pooping in that area.

I have one mare I have to shake my head at because I just seen her do it again so needless to say it's a habit for her. She can be standing outside of the barn and then she'll go in the barn just to poop in the area I piled the manure in and then go back outside. `Figures, too bad I couldn't figure out how to train one to go outside.

I trained a cat to scratch on the couch too. I had one that I'd tell him he was a bad cat if he scratched on the couch and then I'd put him outside. One day I noticed he scratched on the couch and then ran to the door. After that, when he wanted outside, he scratch on the couch and run to the door.

I guess they're smarter than their owner....

Horsin; If you figure out HOW to get them to NOT poop in the barn/stalls, I want you to train mine. BOTH my gelding, and my mare will come in from the turnout, and poop, or worse, pee in the stalls, then go back out!

I think I feel better now.  I have one out of my three horses so I'm lucky it's not all three.

Careful what you wish for. I have a 20 yr old gelding who will not pee in a trailer, in a stall or on a high line. If he is at camp or a show, I have to saddle him and take him riding around until he finds the spot where he is willing to pee. During bad weather, this can be a real problem.

I got a stud and pastured him with my mare, she quit pooping in the shed because he went outside to one of his piles, I sold him but she still goes outside to poo. Not to make you jealous but, I put her in a stall during the hot buggy days 6:30am and she will wait for me to get home 3:10pm and let her out to pee. I like to think I taught her that; one day couple years ago I came from work opened the outside run door and went pee she saw me pee outside so she came out and went pee too, so now while I pick her stall I open the run door she goes out and pees 95% of the time (she rarely ever steps in a pile of poop in her stall either) She waits till 9:00pm to go out to pasture then she will pee again outside.

Gliderider,

Funny, I'd consider squatting outside if I thought it'd help the cause I'd have to do it after dark, I have neighbors....
