We are planning a trip in Sept. to South Dakota.  We live in Texas and don't have to have brand inspections here.  Being from a state that does not require them do we have to get one to ride in South Dakota and if so how do we go about getting them?

Thanks.

We camped at Custer twice, the last trip was Sept. 2011. Before departing SD, the campground owners were able to provide a form labeled "Annual Travel Permit for Horses/Mules" and pay the $3.00 listed on the form. All that was required was a current coggins and health certificate, something you'd need anyway. The owners were certified to sign off. I have blank copies of the form and can send you a copy if you PM me along with an e-mail address.

I don't know if all campgrounds are able to do this or not; however, this saved us calling out a brand inspector. If you know where you plan to camp, a phone call to the owners should do the trick. The phone number on the form's letterhead (South Dakota State Brand Board) is 605-773-3324. Hope that's helpful.

"Branding" is proving ownership - not a mark on your animal.  Most horse campgrounds have a form for you to complete.  Need coggins, health certificate and proof of ownership such as copy of registration papers if register, bill of sale or??

You need to call the state vet.  Each state is different.

No not out in this part of the country.  The State Branding Board appoints individuals to do the inspection in most western states.  In SD the horse camps has the forms.  You need what is in my previous report.  I have been traveling this area for 50+ yrs.

The brand inspection is only necessary when you leave a state that requires brand inspections.

To my knowledge all states that require them also have a permanent inspection card available. One inspection and certification. They give you temporary one, then in a few weeks mail you a credit card size card that's good for the life of the horse or the sale of the horse, which ever comes first.

SD requires the brand inspection west of the Missouri River.  As of 3 - 4 yrs ago, the horse camps can do the inspection for $3 or so.

I stayed at several camps last year in SD including Broken Arrow. No Brand inspection was performed at any location. Just have your papers, health certificate and negative coggins.

Got stopped by a brand inspector while passing through NM several years ago. He was very thorough~checked our papers, had to open up the trailer where he made sure papers matched the horse. We were held up about 30 minutes. So when I got back to IL, out of curiosity I called the NM Livestock Board and asked for the right party to ask what would've happened had I NOT been in compliance. The man on the other end gave me 3 scenarios. 1. If he was having a bad day, he could've impounded my horse. 2. If he was having a so-so day, a fine. 3. If he was in a good mood, a warning and let go. And then he chuckled. It was near 5:00 his time and a Friday, so we got a laugh out of it and agreed I'd have just gotten a warning on this particular day. End of the work week!

Here in New Mexico 'branding'  always means an indelible mark on your animal.

You may be cofuised about New Mexico.  There is the law as far as coming to your state to ride:

77-9-42 Transportation permits for horses, mules and asses; brand and health certificate good for length of time of ownership.

A. A person who owns horses, mules or asses and desires to transport them within the state for a purpose other than their sale or trade may, upon request to an inspector, be issued an owner's transportation permit in lieu of the required brand certificate for each horse, mule or ass to be transported.

B. The owner's transportation permit issued in lieu of a brand certificate is valid as long as the horse, mule or ass described in the certificate remains under the ownership of the person to whom the permit was issued.

C. The owner's transportation permit or the brand certificate shall accompany the animal for which it was issued at all times while the animal is in transit, and each shall identify the horse, mule or ass by brand, color, markings, sex, age and, where applicable, by registration number, tattoo or other mark as provided by rules of the board.

I called the brand board in South Dakota the other day.  He told me about the $3 permit, that it would get me out of South Dakota, but it could not be used in any of the other states requiring brand inspections.  If I got the lifetime one for $10 it could be used in all the states that require them, so I think we will go that way since we are planning to come home thru Wyoming, Colorada and maybe New Mexico.  And hopefully some day we will be able to go back out west to ride.  Now I just have to worry about weed free hay.  Any suggestions on that???

Certified hay is much easier, now that I found the Standlee Hay company. Their products are carried by a very large variety of farm supply stores.
They have a retail store look up on their web site.

I would suggest putting the bales of hay in plastic bags. Makes them much easier to handle.

If you go for the pelletized products, I'd suggest complimenting it with some daily hay. Pellets alone can cause problems. The average horse needs more roughage than what's in the pelleted products.

I'd avoid any source that stores the hay outside. If these bales get wet, the mold quick, and it is sometimes difficult to tell if they are molded in the middle of the bale, until you cut it open.

Purina now makes little blocks of hay that expand into a big pile when water is added that resembles a flake. Not cheap, but convenient and easy to store.

Thanks for that info.  I guess we would have to have the cerifiied weed free hay from them?  We have several TSC within a 50 mile radius.  I have also seen those small bales at a Purina store.  I'll have to do some comparison shopping

Most of the farm stores here in Utah sell certified hay, Since it is a common request.  75% of Utah is public land and certified hay is required on ANY public land.  It sells for about a $1 maybe $2 more per bale than non-certified hay.

The state of Utah also publishes a list of growers who grow certified hay. So you can contact the growers directly.

The biggest problem we have is getting certified hay in the spring,  Last years certified hay has been sold off and this years crops hasn't been cut yet.  So in April or  May it could be hard to find.  By late June, it's no problem.  The second problem with certified hay, it is almost always alfalfa.  It is rare around here to find certified grass.

I suggest you bring along some hay pellets to use as a back up, and call ahead and find a supplier that carries the certified hay that you can buy when you arrive.   Mix your local hay you brought with you, some pellets and the hay you purchase for a day or two as the horses adjust.

One other point. Some of the national parks, Yellowstone in particular, will not allow even certified hay into the park. They will allow processed feeds, such as pellets where the hay has been ground and processed.

None of this helps out for South Dakota, But gives you an idea of how we deal with it here in Utah

Here in Arizona, it is impossible to buy baled certified weed free hay. None of the hay brokers even stock it for special order. The best we can do is feed pellets or one of the very few certified hay cubes; Standlee is a brand that is in very limited supply here. I have only found one place to buy it and that is in Flagstaff. Tractor Supply stores sell it, but there are no TSC stores in AZ. Talk about making it tough to follow the rules and still provide a good diet for the horse.

I just watched a Clinton Andersen Show where he visited Standlee Hay Co., I believe their is a website address further up on the postings for them.  You can contact them directly, and they will ship you products to your specifications, and/or needs.  It actually was pretty neat to see their operations and how thorough they are.  Now it could have been just because they were on Clinton's show, but I doubt it.  Most of their operations are hands on, literally sifting thru the hay itself to ensure quality.  Apparently, it started because they supplied alfalfa for rabbits that are picky hay eaters.  I know it got me interested in their product and supplementing my horses diet with their pelleted hay product as she is an easy keeper, and in a barn that when it comes time for feeding all the horses know it and when she only gets basically a handful of food, you can see that she is left feeling less than satisfied.  I thought trying to add some of the pelleted product to her feed, may be something that may leave her feeling a little more happy at feeding time, without adding too much weight to her rear end.  Now just need to find something to supplement my food, so I don't eat so much, LOL! Sorry, I couldn't resist picking at myself their.
