Should the LED charging light go off on the lid when the light cord is disconnected? I have replaced the lid thinking it had a short in it. It still stays on and discharges the two 12Vbatteries if I don't pull the trailer for several weeks.

Take the break away battery out and have it checked first...it is probably the problem...bad cell, won't hold a charge, etc.

Paul, I have even tried unhooking the breakaway battery to isolate the system but the LED still stays on. I would have thought that would at least shut the LED off on the lid. I may need to trace a few more wires in the 12V battery box to see where power is actually coming from. I purchased the trailer used but feel sure the unit was put on at the factory since it is a 2007.

You say the light is on with the battery OUT of the circuit?

Yeah, I have to disconnect the main lead from the batteries going into the trailer. Taking the Hopkins battery out doesn't shut the LED off. I don't know maybe it should stay on? I just thought it should/would go out once unhooked from my truck. I did have two weak/dead cells in one of my rv batteries and have since replaced both batteries and that certainly would cause a quick discharge.

Hmmm...one would think that with the break-away battery out of the circuit the charge light would go out...but who knows...:( I'm thinking you should determine if your break-away battery is also failing...bad cell, etc.

My trailer does the same thing, if I don't kill power to the main batterys. Switch on battery box has to be shut off. The reason is that power from the truck charges the brake away and trailer batterys.  After disconnecting truck if you don't shut off  power disconnect the trailer batterys, they supply voltage to the brake away.

But does your charge light stay on if you remove your break-away battery from the box and out of the circuit??

It doesn't matter if you physicaly remove break away battery from the unit. The light shows the charge side of the circuit ,at least on the one I have. If either the truck is hooked up and or main disconnect for the main batterys is on. Actually it is a nice reminder to shut off main batterys after returning, usually unloading after dark and hard to miss.

Thanks for the confirmation...which means the OP's breakaway battery probably need to be replaced...

Paul/DLM, I am going to check the breakaway battery. I wish I had a wiring diagram but I thought the breakaway drew current of the trailer batteries also and therefore wired on the non-switched side of the trailer disconnect. I have even contemplated adding a switched power wire to shut power off to the breakaway box. Too much of a pain to unhook from the trailer battery post every time I unhook. Thanks for the feed back.
