We normally install most all of our hitches in our shop at 2-3 inches in front of the axle. A hitch extender can be used if you have need for one, but they will still transfer the weight to that ball location. Keep the ball in front of the axle !!

I but a B&W in my 2005 F350 it goes a few inches in front of the axle (you might want to research different brands as the placement might be a bit different. We also purchased an 4" extender plate that positions the ball 4" back to facilitate turning with wider trailers. With our current setup (see below) we can't fully make a 90 dg turn but we are pretty cllose 80+ deg

Most Gooseneck hitch are designed to attach to existing holes in the frames, so you don't have to drill any holes. As such, they go where they go. You have no choice about how many inches in front of the axle.
